How the aircraft came about

## History Airbus A350

The first flight of the A350 XWB took place in 2013, commercial operation began in 2015. The aircraft was designed for long-distance routes and competition with Boeing 787 and 777.

The A350's early design was due to a deep upgrade of the A330, but in 2006 Airbus moved to a new A350 XWB design. The prototype first flew in 2013; after Qatar Airways certification, it began operating the A350-900 in 2015. The program was created for long routes with less fuel consumption.

Milestones and decisions

## Programme development

After criticizing the first project based on the A330, Airbus moved to the new widebody A350 XWB. The test program was to confirm the operation of a large composite airframe and new Trent XWB engines. The base A350-900 was followed by an elongated -1000, and for especially long flights, a variant of the ULR with a different fuel configuration was prepared. The overall cabin remained part of Airbus’ approach to crew training.

Model features

## Design and variants

The fuselage and wing make extensive use of composite materials. The new wing, two Trent XWB engines and electronic systems are combined into a platform for long-haul flights. The cross section of the cabin is designed for two aisles and usually nine seats in a row in the economy class, although the trim and pitch of the seats depend on the airline.

The A350-1000 is longer and more spacious than the A350-900, and the A350-900ULR is adapted for particularly long flights with a different fuel configuration. The published range of the standard A350-900 does not automatically describe either the extended version or the ULR. An accurate index is required.

Powerplant

## Engines

Two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84.

The engine variant fitted to an individual aircraft is recorded in its documentation. The powerplant affects thrust, fuel consumption, noise and maintenance requirements.

On board

## Cabin and passenger capacity

Two aisles, a quiet lounge and a wide economic layout of 3+3+3. The system maintains more comfortable pressure and humidity compared to many early generations.

Passenger capacity - 332-352 seats in a typical three-class layout; a maximum of 440. The exact number of seats is determined by the operator: business class, kitchens, toilets and recreation areas of the crew take place. Therefore, the layout of the cabin differs even with the same models.

In practice

## Operations and uses

The A350 is used for long-haul scheduled flights between major hubs and for routes where fuel consumption and capacity are important. There are usually several classes in the cabin, but the number of seats depends on the carrier. Long-haul flights require a special fuel configuration and payload limitation, so the range of the A350-900ULR cannot be expected from a conventional A350-900 with the same number of passengers.

Technical analysis

## How it works Airbus A350

Initially, Airbus considered the A350 as a deep development of the A330. After discussion of the project with airlines, a new wide-body XWB design was chosen. A large proportion of composites in the wing and fuselage allowed for a review of mass distribution and aerodynamics, but required a separate program of testing materials and compounds. Two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines were created for this platform. Therefore, the A350 cannot be correctly described as an A330 with a new interior or a single engine replacement.

The A350-900 and the long A350-1000 share a common concept, but the length length changes the load, capacity and chassis requirements. On the -1000, another configuration of the main pillars was used, designed for a heavier aircraft. When designing, long flights were taken into account: the cabin needs space for the kitchen, storage and rest of the crew, and ventilation and supercharging systems must maintain conditions for many hours. These tasks affect the useful volume no less than the width of the fuselage.

The special A350-900ULR is designed for very long non-stop routes. Its capabilities are associated with a different configuration of the fuel system and the limitation of passenger load, and not with the fact that any A350-900 is able to repeat such a flight. The range of the usual variant, elongated -1000 and ULR is published for different conditions. To compare them honestly, you need to specify the number of passengers, cargo, speed, fuel reserve and wind direction. Without these conditions, one maximum number of kilometers reports little about the actual flight.

History and operations

## Role Airbus A350 in airline service

Qatar Airways first began commercial operations of the A350-900 in 2015. After that, the model entered the fleets of carriers building a network of long-distance international flights. For the airline, the combination of range and capacity allows you to open direct routes that do not require a particularly large A380. The choice between A350-900 and -1000 is determined by the number of passengers and cargo, as well as the frequency with which the carrier wants to perform the direction.

On board the A350 are usually placed several classes, and in the economic salon there is a scheme with nine seats in a row. It does not describe the quality of a particular place: the width of the chair, the step, the location of the toilets and partitions are specified by the customer. On long-haul flights, the time of landing and disembarkation, the availability of space for hand luggage and the opportunity to relax are especially noticeable. Therefore, passenger assessment depends not only on the model of the airframe, but also on the cabin of the carrier.

The A350-900ULR has become one of the tools for particularly long routes, where direct communication can be more convenient to transfer. But increasing the duration of the flight complicates the planning of the crew, power and spare airfields. The economic feasibility of such a flight depends on the tariff and load at a limited payload. For most, the A350 is more important than conventional long-haul destinations, in which the aircraft carries a significant number of passengers along with luggage and commercial cargo.

For comparison

## Location Airbus A350 among other aircraft

The Airbus line is useful to consider the task of the route, and not as a sequence of "better - worse". A319, A320 and A321 belong to the same single-pass family, but give different capacity and, in some versions, different range. The A330 and A350 are designed for double-passage and long international flights; the A380 solves the special problem of maximum flow between major airports. The carrier does not choose the largest aircraft at all, but the size that corresponds to the load and the desired frequency. If you send too large a car, empty seats can negate the benefits of its passport effectiveness. If it's too small, there won't be enough space or you'd have to limit your luggage. Therefore, one airline can simultaneously operate several types of Airbus on routes of different length and density.

The general school of cockpit and control systems is noticeable for many Airbus, but it does not make certificates, engines and gliders the same. Even the close A319 and A321 differ in mass, output and layout, and there are much more engineering differences between the A320 and A350. The words ceo, neo, LR, XLR, and ULR refer to specific generations or tasks. When reading the technical table, you should first find the full index of the modification, then check the range conditions: the number of passengers, cargo, cruising mode and fuel reserves. The declared maximum in capacity and the declared maximum in range often refer to different scenarios. This order allows you to compare aircraft on a real flight, rather than a combination of the two most attractive numbers from different advertising lines.
