How the aircraft came about

## History COMAC C929

The C929 remains at the stage of detailed design. COMAC shows the base version layouts at international air shows and continues to work with system suppliers, so the final specifications may still change.

The C929 is designed as a Chinese wide-body long-haul aircraft. Initially, the program developed together with its Russian partner under the designation CR929; then COMAC continued it independently. Unlike the C919, the C929 remains a project: published timelines and parameters may change as development progresses.

Milestones and decisions

## Programme development

The first plans of the wide-body aircraft were developed as part of the joint Russian-Chinese CR929 project. After the change in the structure of the cooperation, COMAC continued the program called C929. For such an aircraft, it is necessary to determine the final dimensions, engine, mass and composition of systems, then build and test experimental machines. Project images and preliminary tables do not yet replace the certified specification.

Model features

## Design and variants

The concept includes two aisles, two engines and a significantly larger cabin than the narrow-body C919. For long-haul flights, fuel supply, wing aerodynamics and structure weight are important, but the final configuration and certified characteristics have not yet been fixed by flight tests.

Sketches and preliminary ranges of capacity and range were published, and options of different lengths were discussed. They cannot be described as already released modifications. The above characteristics are the declared landmarks of the project, and not the result of the operation of the aircraft.

Powerplant

## Engines

The serial configuration power plant has not yet been announced by COMAC.

Until the choice and certification of the power plant, it is impossible to correctly indicate its thrust, fuel consumption and operational parameters.

On board

## Cabin and passenger capacity

Wide-body cabin with two aisles. For the base project, COMAC specifies a range of 282 to 440 seats depending on the layout.

The published values remain design: the final scheme of the salon will appear after the completion of development and certification.

In practice

## The routes the aircraft is designed for

The C929 is designed for long-distance routes, which require a two-pass cabin and a large payload. At the time of description of regular operation, the model does not have: you can not list airlines as operating operators or compare the stated range with the results of passenger flights. After selecting the final configuration, the flight conditions and certification will determine the real capabilities of the aircraft.

Technical analysis

## How it works COMAC C929

The C929 belongs to the following size class after the C919: the concept provides a wide-body cabin with two aisles and long routes. Initially, the project was developed by China and Russia under the designation CR929. Later COMAC continued to work independently. The change in the composition of partners affects the choice of suppliers, engine and systems, so early sketches of the joint program can not be considered an approved design of the current aircraft.

For the wide-body long-range type, the balance of fuel and payload, the size of the wing and the weight of the airframe are especially important. Two engines must provide a route with the necessary reserves and restrictions over remote areas. Until the final configuration is secured by testing and certification, published capacity and range values should be read as development objectives. The number of seats will depend on the layout of the cabin and the requirements of future customers.

The status of the project is different from the status of the flying C919. The C929 does not yet have a mass-produced passenger version, for which it would be possible to check fuel consumption on a regular flight, turnaround time at the airport or reliability statistics. Prior to these stages are the production of pilot nodes, ground checks, prototype flights and certification. Any comparisons with the A350 or Boeing 787 now refer to a market target rather than confirmed operational results.

History and operations

## Role COMAC C929 in airline service

If the program is brought to the series, the C929 should take place in long-distance transportation with a large number of passengers and luggage. The two-pass cabin involves several classes and enough space to service a multi-hour flight. However, the future airline will be able to evaluate the aircraft only after the final data on fuel consumption, reliability, availability of spare parts and airport restrictions.

At the development stage, it is impossible to talk about the current operators, schedules or passenger experience of the C929. Even the published layout of the cabin does not show the exact serial layout: customers can choose a different number of seats, kitchens, toilets and crew rest areas. In the tables of preliminary characteristics, it is useful to separate the declared goal from the measured result, so as not to create a false impression of the finished aircraft.

The C929 story is useful as an example of the complexity of a major international program. Changing partnerships and suppliers may force a review of design, timing, and scope of testing. Therefore, messages about the new date of the first flight or pre-order should be compared with real technical stages. For the reader, the most reliable milestones are rolling out the finished prototype, its flight and obtaining a certificate when they actually take place.

Special care should be taken with the expected passenger capacity. For a wide-body liner, the manufacturer can publish the number of seats in a dense scheme, and the airline will later choose several classes, kitchens and crew rest places. Then the actual capacity will be lower, although the glider will not change. The same applies to range: it depends on the mass of passengers, commercial cargo and fuel reserve. While the C929 has not made test flights, these parameters are useful as design benchmarks, but not as a promise of a particular flight.

The project is also influenced by the choice of production engine and service outside the production center. For long-haul flights, the airline must be confident in the availability of spare parts on a wide network of airports. Separately, training programs for pilots, engineering personnel and cabin crew will be needed. These tasks are not visible in the image of the aircraft, but they separate the prototype from a sustainable commercial fleet.

For comparison

## Location COMAC C929 among other aircraft

Three COMAC programs belong to different segments. The C909, formerly called the ARJ21, is designed for regional lines with a relatively small flow. The C919 occupies a class of mass single-aisle aircraft with one pass. The C929 is conceived as a long-range wide-body type with two aisles, but remains a development program for the time being. Their sequence shows the growth of the manufacturer’s tasks, but the experience of operating one aircraft does not automatically confirm the readiness of the next. For the C909, there is already a history of regional operators; for the C919, commercial flight data is accumulated; for the C929, key checks are still ahead. Therefore, the phrase "COMAC aircraft" combines projects at completely different stages of maturity.

When evaluating a new model, it is not only the dimensions of the fuselage and the engine that are important. The manufacturer needs to organize the supply of parts, technical documentation, crew training and service support for airlines. Chinese C919 certification has confirmed the basic version according to the rules of the national regulator, but international geography requires independent work with other aviation authorities. For the C929, even the final figures still depend on the design and testing. When comparing with Airbus or Boeing, it is worth comparing aircraft of the same class and the same status: the serial regional C909 with regional competitors, the C919 operated with narrow-body, the C929 project - with the design goals of the long-range segment. Otherwise, the table will mix the confirmed data with the intentions of the developer.

Development phase

## Status of programme

The C929 does not yet have commercial operators: the aircraft has not yet made its first flight and has not arrived at the airline.

- COMAC carries out detailed design of the basic version

Project characteristics may change before design, testing and certification are completed.
