How the aircraft came about

## History Yak-130

The prototype first flew in 1996, the serial Yak-130 - in 2004. The control system allows you to simulate the behavior of different combat aircraft.

Yak-130 was conceived as a training aircraft for training pilots of new combat vehicles. At an early stage, the project was developed together with the Italian Aermacchi; later the companies continued their own programs. Experienced Yak-130 first flew in 1996, after improvements the aircraft was adopted in Russia in 2010.

Milestones and decisions

## Programme development

Development of the Yak-130 began with the task of replacing the training aircraft of the previous generation and preparing pilots for modern fighters. At an early stage, the Italian Aermacchi participated; after the separation of the programs, the Russian Yak-130 and the Italian M-346 went in different ways. The serial machine received a digital control system and the ability to simulate the behavior of other combat aircraft in training.

Model features

## Design and variants

This is a two-seater aircraft with seats behind each other and two jet engines. Digital control system allows you to set training characteristics, bringing the behavior of the machine to different types of combat aircraft. The cabin is designed for an instructor and a cadet; Yak-130 does not have a passenger cabin.

The main serial machine combines training tasks with the possibility of using weapons in light combat missions. Export aircraft may differ in equipment and system composition. The parameters of the training Yak-130 can not be compared with the passenger capacity of the airliners from the rest of the catalog.

Powerplant

## Engines

Two two-circuit turbojet engines AI-222-25.

The engine variant fitted to an individual aircraft is recorded in its documentation. The powerplant affects thrust, fuel consumption, noise and maintenance requirements.

On board

## Flight deck

Two places in tandem under a common lantern: the cadet in front, the instructor in the back. Catapult chairs are installed.

The cabin is designed for two crew members: a cadet and an instructor. The Yak-130 does not have a passenger compartment.

In practice

## Operations and uses

Yak-130 serves in training units, where the cadet and instructor sit one after another. The aircraft can carry weapons for light combat missions, but the main role is associated with the training of pilots. Exports have led to differences in the composition of equipment. It is impossible to compare it with passenger aircraft of the catalog by capacity or cabin scheme: this is a separate military class of equipment.

Technical analysis

## How it works Yak-130

Yak-130 was created as a transitional training aircraft between initial training and modern combat vehicles. At an early stage, the Russian program collaborated with the Italian Aermacchi; then the developers continued their own projects. The first experimental flight dates back to 1996, but the serial aircraft underwent further changes. Therefore, the history of the early demonstrator and the possibility of a late machine can not be reduced to a single date.

The cockpit has two seats one after the other: the front for the trained pilot and the rear for the instructor. Digital control allows you to change training characteristics and practice behavior that resembles different combat aircraft. This helps to gradually prepare the pilot for a more complex technique. There is no passenger cabin, kitchen or row of seats on board; comparison with airliners in terms of capacity here makes no sense.

Two jet engines provide the flight modes required for the training program. The design also provides for the use of weapons, which expands the possible tasks beyond normal training. However, the installed equipment may differ from the export side. When reading the characteristics, you need to take into account the weight of the suspensions and the flight conditions: the speed or range of the training aircraft cannot be transferred to the combat configuration without reservations.

History and operations

## Role Yak-130 in airline service

In training units, Yak-130 allows the instructor to observe the actions of the cadet in the same flight and intervene if necessary. Training includes aircraft control, navigation and development of complex modes before switching to combat type. For this task, repeatability of behavior, reliability of equipment and the ability to quickly change training scenarios, rather than the comfort of the passenger cabin, are important.

Yak-130 was also supplied to foreign customers. The export park may differ in the composition of avionics, communications and available weapons. Therefore, the message about the use of the aircraft of one country does not give a complete description of the board of another. Maintenance and availability of training machines affect the pace of pilot training no less than individual flight indicators.

The aircraft has the ability to perform light combat missions, but its main role remains training. For real use, the type of weapons, the mass of suspensions, the mission profile and the conditions of the airfield are important. In the catalog Yak-130 is next to passenger models as a separate aircraft type; its indicators are useful to read in its own context of crew training and special purpose.

In the training program, it is important to gradually move from basic skills to complex actions. Yak-130 allows you to work with devices, control in different modes and interact with the instructor in one flight. The ability to program the response of the control system helps to make the training task closer to the machine to which the pilot is then retrained. At the same time, not all skills can be transferred automatically: a separate combat type has its own sizes, systems and limitations.

The dual-seat cockpit facilitates real-time learning: the instructor sees the student's actions and can intervene without waiting for post-flight analysis. For the school, the aircraft resource, the availability of the engine and the ability to conduct many training flights are important. These indicators do not fall into the usual speed and range table, but directly determine the value of the training type. Therefore, the history of the Yak-130 is associated not only with its first flight, but also with the development of the practice of training pilots.

For comparison

## Location Yak-130 among other aircraft

Training and combat Yak-130 is in this aviation catalog next to passenger aircraft, but solves a different problem. Its crew consists of a cadet and an instructor, who are placed one after another. On the training flight, the training scenario, the reaction of the aircraft to the teams and the ability to safely work out the complex mode are important. Passenger number of seats, economy class and range at commercial loading are not applicable to it. Such a difference helps not to mislead the reader when comparing tables: the same term "aircraft" does not mean the same criteria of utility for an airliner and a military training machine.

The digital control system Yak-130 allows you to specify characteristics for training pilots of aircraft of different classes. But the ability to simulate the behavior of another type does not turn the training machine into this type and does not replace the stage of retraining on a combat aircraft. When using weapons, the weight, aerodynamics and flight task change; passport indicators without suspensions do not always describe the combat configuration. Export machines can also have a different set of equipment. Therefore, in the material about the Yak-130, it is important to read the history of development, the cabin device and the role in preparing together, and not look for the nearest analogue among passenger airliners.

Yak-130 is used for sequential development of jet piloting: the student first gets acquainted with the usual modes, then performs more complex maneuvers and tasks. Two seats in the cockpit are needed by the instructor and trainee, not commercial transportation. The ability to hang weapons expands training and combat scenarios, but changes the weight and limitations of the aircraft. Therefore, data on range or speed without suspensions can not be transferred to the armed configuration without reservations. This feature distinguishes the Yak-130 from passenger models of the catalog stronger than the difference in size.
