History and operations

## About the airline Air France

### History and development

Air France was formed in 1933 by the merger of five French air carriers. Since 2004, it is part of a common group with the Dutch KLM.

Predecessors included Air Orient, Air Union, CIDNA, the Farman line, and Aéropostale. The merger brought the new airline an extensive network and a diverse fleet, which then had to lead to a single system of work.

The five combined companies brought Air France lines to different parts of Europe, North Africa and overseas. After World War II, the network was restored: in 1946, flights began between Paris and New York with intermediate stops.

Air France received the backbone of the network from five predecessor companies already operating in Europe and beyond. After the Second World War, French transportation was restored almost anew: the opening of the Paris-New York connection in 1946 became a symbol of the return of long-distance lines. Later, the development of the jet fleet made it possible to reduce the duration of intercontinental trips.

The creation of Air France combined the experience of companies with very different geography: some developed European flights, others - postal and long-distance lines. After the war, the airline restored the network with support for Paris, and later began to use jet aircraft. In the 21st century, it retained an independent name within a common group with KLM.

#### Milestones

- 1933: Five French carriers merged under the new Air France brand.
- 1946: After the war, Paris began to communicate with New York on planes with intermediate landings.
- With the development of jet aviation, long-haul flights began to take less time, and Paris became the main interchange hub.
- 2000: Air France became a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance.
- 2004: Air France-KLM formed a group in which the French company retained its own brand and hub.

### Route networks

The main hub of the company is Paris - Charles de Gaulle: European flights here connect with long-distance routes to America, Africa and Asia. The park features aircraft for both segments of the network.

In the Air France-KLM group, French and Dutch carriers retain their own brands and major airports. The Paris hub works together with the Amsterdam hub, and joint programs and partners are expanding travel options.

Paris airports have different roles: Charles de Gaulle remains the main international hub, and Orly is also associated with the history of French and European lines. After the merger with KLM, the two national brands continued to operate each of their hubs.

Air France has several important French airports, but Charles de Gaulle plays a key role in international transfers. Through it, European flights connect with routes to America, Africa and Asia. Eagles and regional bases complement this scheme, so a specific Paris airport should be checked before buying a ticket.

### Aircraft and features

On European routes, Air France uses more compact aircraft, including the Airbus A220 and the A320 family. For long-haul flights, the fleet has Airbus A350, Boeing 777 and 787; the destination depends on the demand and the specific flight.

Participation in SkyTeam and the common with KLM Flying Blue program complement their own network. With a transfer trip, this gives more route options, but the performing carrier and fare rules may differ on individual sections.

In the post-war decades, long-distance routes were performed on Douglas and Lockheed propellers, then the park moved successively to jet aircraft. The current combination of A220, A320, A350 and wide-body Boeing reflects the same need to maintain lines of different lengths.

The modern Air France-KLM group combines two historic brands, but does not erase the differences between them. Air France maintains a Paris hub, its own aircraft and flights, while KLM builds a network through Amsterdam. The general Flying Blue program and SkyTeam participation help connect these networks, but the fare rules and board type depend on the specific site.

The transition from old screw machines to jetliners has changed both the speed and scale of long-distance transportation. The modern fleet continues to be updated: the Airbus A220 is suitable for European routes, the A350 is suitable for long-haul routes, and the Boeing 777 remains an important wide-body type. Participation in SkyTeam and Flying Blue is about partnerships and service, not the same technique on all flights.
