History and operations

## About the airline NordStar

### History and development

The NordStar brand appeared in 2008 on the basis of the Taimyr airline. The carrier is connected primarily with the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Norilsk air communication with other cities of Russia.

Since 2011, NordStar has played the role of one of the main carriers of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The company serves not only commercial destinations, but also communications with hard-to-reach northern settlements.

The legal history of NordStar is associated with the Taimyr airline, and a new brand appeared in the late 2000s. The first regular flight under it took place in June 2009 between Moscow and Norilsk - on the line, which explains the purpose of the carrier.

NordStar grew out of Taimyr Airlines and gained its own recognizable brand for the Krasnoyarsk Territory’s ties with the rest of the country. After the first flight Moscow-Norilsk in 2009, the network was supplemented by regional lines on ATR 42-500. This stage lasted until 2021, when turboprop aircraft transferred to KrasAvia.

The connection with Norilsk has shaped the character of NordStar since its early years. When a ground trip to a major city is unavailable or takes much longer, a regular jet becomes part of the daily infrastructure. This task distinguishes the carrier from companies that build the network mainly around seasonal tourist demand.

#### Milestones

- 2008: NordStar brand was created on the basis of Taimyr Airlines.
- June 2009: the first regular flight connected Moscow and Norilsk.
- Since 2011, a regional program on turboprop ATR 42-500 has been operating in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
- 2021: five ATR 42-500 were transferred to KrasAvia, and the basis of the NordStar main fleet was a Boeing 737-800.
- The entire history of the carrier is closely connected with the transport accessibility of Norilsk and the northern territories of the region.

### Route networks

For the northern territories, such flights are of particular importance: distances are great, and land routes are not always available. In addition to routes to Norilsk, the company operates flights between major Russian cities.

The first regular flight of the new carrier connected Moscow and Norilsk in 2009. A network gradually formed around this line, for which Norilsk and Krasnoyarsk became the main geographical landmarks.

For the residents of Norilsk, an airplane is the main way to get to major cities outside the industrial area. Therefore, the NordStar network was formed not only according to the laws of tourist demand: it provides constant communication with mainland nodes.

The base in the Krasnoyarsk Territory made it possible to combine the Moscow direction with regional flights. During the ATR 42-500, the program included shorter lines, and after the transfer of these aircraft, part of the regional role was transferred to KrasAvia. NordStar’s historical maps can therefore show directions that are not in the company’s current schedule.

### Aircraft and features

At the heart of the main part of the park is a Boeing 737-800. The choice of routes and frequencies depends on demand, airport conditions and seasonality, but the connection of the Norilsk Industrial District with other cities remains the central theme of the carrier's history.

Historically, NordStar also used regional ATR 42 turboprop aircraft for the lines of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Later, this fleet was transferred to another carrier; in the selection of current main types, the Boeing 737 remains the main one.

From 2011 to 2021 in the regional program worked turboprop ATR 42-500. Later, these cars were transferred to KrasAvia, and NordStar focused on the Boeing 737-800 main fleet.

The carrier has its own training and maintenance services: the maintenance center opened in Krasnoyarsk and Norilsk in 2019, and later the training center developed. For regular northern routes, this is practical: the serviceability of the fleet and the training of crews directly affect the stability of communication with cities remote from the main aviation hubs.

The development of its own technical service and training center reduces dependence on external contractors. The company also launched a “Fly Easy!” loyalty program for frequent flyers. These directions do not change the basic task of the Boeing 737-800 fleet, but show how a separate system of service and training of personnel has grown around transportation.
