History and operations

## About the airline Ural Airlines

### History and development

The roots of Ural Airlines are connected with the Sverdlovsk Aviation Unit, which developed at Koltsovo Airport. During the Soviet period, it was a single airline with its own flight and ground services.

After the separation of airport and flight activities in 1993, Ural Airlines emerged as an independent airline. Ekaterinburg and Koltsovo remained its historical center.

Civil aviation Koltsovo was formed in the war years: the first units appeared here in 1943. Later, the aviation units merged into a large Sverdlovsk enterprise, from which an independent airline separated after the division in 1993.

Before the emergence of an independent company, Sverdlovsk aviators consistently mastered Li-2, Il-18, Yak-40 and Tu-154. Each new type extended the range and capacity of the available lines. After the division of the company in 1993, Ural Airlines retained contact with Koltsovo, but began to be responsible for their own commercial program and the choice of aircraft.

The continuity of Ural Airlines can be traced through the change of several generations of technology. Sverdlovsk Air Force went from piston Li-2 to jet Tu-154, and the independent company later abandoned the Soviet fleet in favor of Airbus. Despite these changes, Yekaterinburg remained the main point of its history and an important source of passenger traffic.

#### Milestones

- 1943: Civil aviation units began to work in Koltsovo, from which the Sverdlovsk aviation enterprise grew.
- 1945: Crews performed flights from Sverdlovsk to Moscow and Mineralnye Vody with several landings along the way.
- 1963: The units were merged into the Sverdlovsk Joint Aviation Unit.
- 1993: After the separation of the airport and the carrier, independent Ural Airlines appeared.
- Since 2006, the renewal of the Airbus fleet has gradually replaced Soviet-made aircraft.

### Route networks

Koltsovo serves as a natural hub between the European part of Russia, the Urals and Siberia. Therefore, the airline’s routes include both flights from Yekaterinburg and direct connections to other major cities.

In addition to Yekaterinburg, the company operates flights from other major cities of Russia. This geography allows you to choose between a direct flight and a route through one of the hub airports, depending on the season and schedule.

Back in 1945, the crews of the carrier's predecessor flew from Sverdlovsk to Moscow and Mineralnye Vody with intermediate landings. The modern network solves a similar problem of communication of the Urals with other parts of the country, but relies on completely different aircraft and airport infrastructure.

The network gradually ceased to be built only around Koltsovo. The company worked both from Moscow and St. Petersburg airports, and also opened direct lines between other cities. For the traveler, this means that the name "Ural" indicates the origin of the carrier, but does not limit the geography of its departures to one region.

### Aircraft and features

The company’s fleet is built around the Airbus A320 family: models A319, A320 and A321 allow you to select the capacity for demand. The carrier connects the regions of Russia with each other, with the capital and foreign points.

The transition to the same type of aircraft family became an important stage in the development of the company. Close to the device of the cabin and common approaches to maintenance help to use several options for capacity without completely different training systems.

The fleet renewal program began in 2006 and gradually replaced the Soviet types with Airbus A320 family. For the airline, this meant a transition to a common technical platform, and for the passenger - a similar format of the cabin on different routes.

The renewal of the fleet since 2006 has led to the transition to variants of the same Airbus A320 family. This reduced the variety of technical systems used compared to the former Soviet park. At the same time, the A319, A320 and A321 differ in capacity: the carrier appoints a specific modification taking into account the demand and availability of the board on the selected line.

A319, A320 and A321 belong to the same family, but differ in the number of seats and suitability for a particular route. The use of similar aircraft helps to plan the work of crews and technical base. The historic Yak-40 and Tu-154 remain part of the company’s history, but should not be confused with current destinations on flights.
