# Passenger aircraft speed: 800–930 km/hPassenger aircraft speed: 800–930 km/h

Cruising speed and the difference between airspeed and groundspeed.

The short answer

The cruising speed of a jet passenger aircraft is usually about 800-930 km/h relative to the surrounding air. For reference: Airbus A320 flies around Mach 0.78, long-haul A350 - about Mach 0.85. This is the speed on the echelon; when you climb and approach the landing, it is lower.

## Air and road speed: what is the difference

The number depends on the model, altitude, temperature, mass and selected flight mode. The Mach number shows the ratio of the speed of the aircraft to the local speed of sound, so it can not be translated in km / h by one constant multiplier at any altitude.

The travel speed shows the movement relative to the ground. If the plane flies through the air at a speed of 850 km / h, and the associated component of the wind is 100 km / h, about 950 km / h will be relative to the ground. Oncoming wind will reduce the speed. It is her passenger who often sees on the flight map.

The crew needs the instrument speed to comply with the modes and limitations of the aircraft; true airspeed describes movement relative to air. The average speed for the entire flight is lower than cruising, because it includes climbing and lowering.
