Radio-navigation equipment measuring slant distance to a ground station.

DME determines distance between the aircraft and the station rather than horizontal distance along the ground.

The difference becomes noticeable near a station at altitude. DME can be paired with other navigation aids, but its distance indication does not by itself provide a bearing or complete aircraft position.
