## History

The Atlas Cheetah was a family of South African fighters produced by extensively upgrading Dassault Mirage III aircraft. During the 1980s, South Africa faced difficulty obtaining new foreign combat aircraft and sought to extend the service of an existing fleet. Atlas Aircraft Corporation started with available airframes and modified them substantially. The first Cheetah was presented publicly in 1986. That date describes the programme's unveiling, not a single maiden flight shared by every later variant.

The work involved refurbishment, structural changes, new equipment, and adaptation to revised missions. Its Mirage III heritage remains visible in the overall outline and delta wing, but appearance does not reveal all the changes to radar, cockpit, and weapons. Individual aircraft came from different donor airframes, so their histories have to be traced by variant. Cheetah names a conversion programme, rather than an entirely new airframe manufactured from the beginning in one fixed standard.

The family included single-seat and two-seat versions. The two-seat Cheetah D supported pilot conversion and could undertake other tasks within its equipment limits. The single-seat Cheetah E and later Cheetah C represented different stages of improvement. One general specification table cannot describe them all. Their donor airframes, systems fit, and dates of service differed. Moving from an early to a later standard required additional industrial work and training for maintenance personnel.

The Cheetah served the South African Air Force's need to retain interception and strike capabilities while access to new aircraft remained restricted. Airfield condition, mission range, weapons fit, and the operational situation shaped how it was used. Maximum speed or the number of weapon stations cannot explain the entire value of the type. An individual sortie also depends on pilots, ground control, and the technical readiness of the aircraft.

These fighters gradually gave way to newer types. The South African Air Force ended their front-line service in the 2000s, although some airframes and associated expertise continued beyond their original units. Photographs should be examined carefully to distinguish a Cheetah from the original Mirage III and the Israeli Kfir, both of which belong to related design traditions. Similar wings and shared engineering ideas do not make the aircraft identical types.

The Atlas Cheetah shows how an extensive upgrade can prolong an existing platform's life when new equipment is difficult to obtain. It also illustrates the limits of that approach: old airframe life, upgrade costs, and changing demands on sensors eventually make replacement necessary. A reliable account distinguishes the C, D, and E variants and does not confuse the public debut of the programme with their separate flight-test histories.
