Its name resembles that of the F/A-18A–D, but the newer aircraft is larger and has substantially revised wings, fuselage, engines and systems. For the United States Navy it offered greater capability while retaining familiar principles of carrier operation. The F/A-18E/F first flew in November 1995 and entered operational service early in the following decade. The E suffix identifies the single-seat version and F the two-seat version. Both are designed to launch from a carrier and recover using arresting gear. Strengthened landing gear, an arresting hook and folding wings respond to the limited space and demanding landings aboard ship. Two engines power the aircraft, while different missiles, bombs, tanks and specialist pods can be carried externally. The load depends on the assignment: air cover, surface attack, escort or another mission. Stores change weight, range and maneuverability, so one quoted radius cannot describe every sortie. Versatility is particularly valuable in naval aviation. A carrier has a limited number of aircraft positions while its task list can change quickly. The Super Hornet allows planners to cover several missions without a separate aircraft type for each. Its effectiveness nevertheless depends on the entire carrier group: intelligence, communications, maintenance, pilot training and coordinated deck crews. A capable fighter cannot replace those systems. Preparing it for another flight can be as important as its performance once airborne. The programme has received updates to radar, communications, cockpit equipment and other systems. Individual aircraft gained improvements at different times, so an early production F/A-18E is not identical to a later upgraded example. The two-seat airframe also provided the basis for the EA-18G Growler electronic-warfare aircraft, a distinct specialist type. The original A–D Hornet and E/F Super Hornet must likewise be distinguished; a similar designation does not make them the same modification. The Super Hornet's historical role lies in the evolution of multirole carrier aviation. It replaced several earlier types aboard US carriers and became a central tool for fighter and strike missions. The programme illustrates how a new generation can preserve operating continuity while changing the aircraft itself substantially.
