## History

The Chengdu J-10 became an important Chinese programme to develop a domestically designed multirole fighter. Its first prototype flew near Chengdu on 23 March 1998. After a lengthy test period, J-10s began reaching training units and then operational formations of the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Development did not end with the original aircraft. Changes in equipment and mission requirements produced several noticeably different series under the same family name.

The fighter has one engine, a delta wing, and forward canards. This arrangement gives it a recognisable outline, but its appearance does not reveal the complete avionics fit. Radar, communications, cockpit electronics, and compatible weapons changed as the family developed. An early J-10A and a later J-10C cannot be assessed from one technical description. Pilot preparation and coordination with ground-based detection also matter in an operational air-defence mission.

The family includes both single-seat and two-seat aircraft. The two-seat J-10S supports crew training, while later J-10B and J-10C versions brought changes to the air intake and onboard systems. Newer variants use different sensors and missiles, although the precise fit depends on production series and customer. J-10 aircraft also fly with the Chinese air force's aerobatic team, making the type familiar to visitors at international airshows. A display flight, however, does not independently prove every claimed combat capability.

China operates the J-10 for air-defence and other tactical aviation missions. The export J-10CE has also entered Pakistani service. Accounts of its use should separate confirmed deliveries and training activities from disputed claims about combat results. Public information on newer variants changes frequently and does not always provide equally reliable figures for range, radar, or weapons. A careful history of development is therefore more useful than an isolated numerical estimate.

The J-10 illustrates the gradual growth of China's fighter industry, from an initial prototype to successive upgrades and an export version. Its practical value depends on sensors, weapons, maintenance, and personnel training, not on speed alone. Comparison with another fighter only makes sense when the exact variant and mission conditions are identified. Both the original design and later changes are central to understanding why newer J-10s differ significantly from the first series.
