It retained a delta wing from the earlier line but used more modern aerodynamics and electronic flight controls. The first prototype flew on 10 March 1978. Service began during the 1980s, with the early Mirage 2000C intended chiefly for air defence. The family later expanded into strike and multirole variants, so one designation covers aircraft with different principal assignments. Fly-by-wire controls helped exploit the delta wing's characteristics and improve handling across the flight envelope. A single engine made the layout simpler than a twin-engine fighter, while still requiring attention to available thrust and fuel on each mission. Radar and weapons evolved with successive versions. The Mirage 2000-5 gained stronger air-combat capabilities, whereas the two-seat 2000D and 2000N were developed for other tasks. Their instruments and weapons cannot be described as one unchanging package. The French Air Force used Mirage 2000s for alert duty, interception, and strike operations. India, Greece, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries also acquired the aircraft. Export versions often differed in equipment and later upgrades. For an operator, the aircraft's capability on its delivery date was only part of the story: avionics, software, missiles, and ground support could all be updated. Some fleets served far longer than originally expected. Mirage 2000s appeared in operations across several regions. Missions could involve defending airspace, attacking targets with guided weapons, and supporting allied forces. Results must be considered in relation to configuration, sortie, and rules governing weapon use. A shared family name does not mean every aircraft can perform every mission assigned to another variant. Success also depends on crew preparation, intelligence, refuelling, and integration with the wider command system. Rafale gradually began replacing Mirage 2000s in French service, but the older aircraft remains historically important. It marked a transition from an early supersonic delta fighter to one with electronic control and evolving avionics.
