Development

## History

The IAI Nesher emerged from Israel's military needs and its effort to establish domestic production of jet fighters. Its design was based on the French Dassault Mirage 5, a relative of the Mirage III. After restrictions on French aircraft deliveries, Israel sought to reduce dependence on an external source of combat aircraft. Israel Aircraft Industries organized production of the Nesher, which the company calls the first fighter manufactured in the country. Published dates for some early flights differ, but the aircraft was moving toward service by the early 1970s.

The aircraft retained the characteristic Mirage delta wing, single engine, and compact fuselage. It could be used for fighter or strike tasks according to its weapons and operating conditions. Its arrangement was familiar to Israeli pilots already experienced with French aircraft. That family relationship does not mean that all equipment, procedures, or support arrangements were identical. Each version needs to be identified by its own designation and particular origin.

Establishing Nesher production was an industrial achievement. The company had to build more than an airframe: assembly, testing, maintenance, and workforce training all required organization. The goal was a functioning manufacturing process for a combat aircraft. For that reason the programme matters beyond the number of machines completed. Experience with the Nesher helped prepare IAI for its later fighter line, including the more extensively modified Kfir.

The Nesher served with the Israeli Air Force during a period of intense fleet change. It was used in air operations and could carry weapons for attacks on ground targets. Understanding its role requires attention to differences between aircraft, armament, crew preparation, and the task of a particular sortie. Broad claims that one fighter was simply better or worse than another are of little value without comparable conditions. Documented service history is more useful than sweeping performance judgments.

After Israeli service, Argentina acquired a number of the aircraft. They received the Dagger name, while some were subsequently updated under local designations. The Argentine Air Force confirms the purchase of Nesher aircraft in 1978 and their use in its fighter group. This export phase shows how the history of one design can continue under a new name and in another military system. Later changes to Argentine aircraft should not automatically be attributed to the original Israeli Nesher.

The Nesher occupies a place between its French design heritage and the independent growth of Israeli aircraft industry. It was not the same aircraft as the later Kfir, whose programme involved much more extensive changes, particularly to propulsion and equipment. To understand the Nesher, its design basis, Israeli production, operational service, and Argentine career need to be considered as separate stages.
