The programme arose from a need to replace ageing fighters and address increasingly capable detection and interception systems. Designers combined reduced radar signature, maneuverability, advanced sensors and the ability to sustain supersonic flight without afterburner under suitable conditions. The engineering-development aircraft first flew in 1997. Following testing, F-22s began entering combat units in the middle of the 2000s. The Raptor's low-observable design involves airframe shaping, materials and the carriage of some weapons inside the fuselage. This does not make the aircraft invisible. Detection probability depends on radar frequency, viewing angle, distance and other conditions. Internal bays help preserve a desired configuration for certain missions. External weapons or fuel alter the aircraft's characteristics. A description of one configuration should not be assumed to cover every sortie. Two engines with thrust-vectoring nozzles work with the aerodynamics to provide strong flight performance. Onboard sensors collect information about the surrounding airspace, and systems combine it for the pilot. The F-22's principal mission is air dominance, although it can perform a limited set of strike tasks. The F-22 was produced for the United States Air Force and was not exported. Upgrades during its service have affected software, communications and weapons use, so the exact configuration depends on time and unit. Historically, the Raptor became one of the first operational fighters to combine low observability with high speed and maneuverability in one platform. It changed expectations about how a fighter gathers information and acts as part of a force. Its abilities cannot be reduced to the word stealth.
