Its designers wanted a fighter able to remain faster than sound without diving. The YF-100A prototype first flew on 25 May 1953. The F-100 became the first production American fighter capable of sustained supersonic speed in level flight. That was a major milestone for the Air Force, although reaching a new speed did not by itself solve the practical demands of daily operation. Early aircraft needed substantial refinement. Testing exposed difficult handling behaviour, including stability problems in some flight conditions. Accidents brought restrictions and design changes during the first period of service. The F-100 thus demonstrates that crossing the sound barrier demanded new knowledge of pilot training, quality control, and maintenance as well as aerodynamics. Later versions corrected problems and broadened the range of missions the aircraft could perform. The single-seat F-100D became the most numerous member of the family. It carried equipment for attacks on surface targets and was used primarily as a fighter-bomber. Four cannon could be supplemented by a variety of external stores. The two-seat F-100F served in training but also undertook specialised combat assignments. The aircraft could reach a target quickly and carry a useful load for its period, yet range, visibility, and vulnerability to newer air defences remained operational limits. In the Vietnam War, Super Sabres initially escorted strike aircraft and attacked targets themselves. As enemy air defences grew stronger, newer types assumed many of the dangerous missions farther north, while the F-100 continued to provide extensive close air support in South Vietnam. F-100Fs also flew forward air control and early suppression-of-air-defence missions. These different tasks matter: the aircraft did not occupy one unchanging combat role throughout the war. Production ended in 1959, but F-100s remained with American units and foreign operators for many years. Their gradual replacement reflected advances in radar, missiles, and expectations for multirole aircraft. The Super Sabre stands out as a transitional design: it brought sustained supersonic flight into production fighter service and then became a hardworking strike platform.
