Its prototype first flew on 30 December 1933. A cantilever wing, the planned enclosed cockpit, and retractable landing gear set it apart from many contemporary biplanes. The compact aircraft entered production rapidly and became a mainstay of Soviet fighter aviation before the Second World War. For its time, the design was both modern and demanding. The short fuselage and sensitive controls gave the pilot a quick response but required careful training. It was less forgiving of rough handling than a docile trainer. Retracting the landing gear by hand added to cockpit workload. Engines and armament changed among many versions: aircraft carried different combinations of machine guns, cannon, and external stores. Treating every I-16 as one unchanging model therefore hides important differences in combat capability. I-16s fought in Spain, China, and the Khalkhin Gol conflict before the German-Soviet war began. These campaigns gave air forces experience with a fast monoplane and exposed the limits of early equipment. By 1941 newer fighters existed, but the I-16 remained numerous and met the opening attacks at many frontline bases. Units used it to defend troops, intercept aircraft, and attack surface targets. Success depended on pilot preparation, communications, aircraft condition, and local force balance. Early in the war, units continued flying the I-16 despite its disadvantages against some newer opposing aircraft. Agility and small size could help in close combat, while limited speed or altitude performance in particular variants restricted tactical choices. Its record cannot be judged from the design date alone: production versions, upgrades, and crew experience differed. Training replacement pilots and maintaining spare-parts supplies mattered as much as the aircraft's original drawings. More modern types gradually displaced the I-16 from frontline service. It retains a distinctive place in aviation history as one of the earliest mass-produced fighter monoplanes with retractable landing gear. Its bold layout helped move fighter design beyond the biplane era but placed substantial demands on the pilot.
