## History

Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt began as a fighter project but developed into a large, heavy aircraft built around a powerful radial engine and turbocharger. It first flew on 6 May 1941, and production aircraft reached American units in 1942. The P-47 was unusually substantial for a single-engine fighter. That size carried penalties in manoeuvrability and fuel use, but it also supported a strong structure, heavy armament, and equipment for high-altitude operation.

In Europe, Thunderbolts initially became important bomber escorts. They could fight at high altitude and gained speed rapidly in a dive. Early versions, however, could not always accompany bombers over an entire long route. External tanks and improvements increased their reach, while the arrival of the P-51 changed how escort duties were distributed. The P-47 was increasingly used where its durability and ability to carry weapons offered an advantage.

As a fighter-bomber, the aircraft attacked transport, stores, defensive positions, and other ground targets. Eight heavy machine guns could be supplemented with bombs and rockets according to the mission. The air-cooled engine and robust airframe could survive some damage that might be especially serious for a liquid-cooled aircraft. This did not make low-level missions safe. Ground fire, weather, and navigation errors remained major threats to pilots operating close to the battlefield.

P-47s served in several theatres and with allied air forces. The numerous D series included aircraft with different canopy styles, later versions improving the view to the rear. Other variants had different performance and equipment. More than fifteen thousand Thunderbolts were built, showing the scale of the programme, but that total should not obscure differences among production blocks. A useful specification must identify the particular version and the load being carried rather than treating every P-47 as identical.

After the war, jets gradually assumed the leading fighter roles, while the Thunderbolt remained a symbol of the heavy piston-engine fighter that could handle several assignments. Its story differs from that of the lighter Mustang: the P-47 was especially valued for toughness, high-altitude capability, and attack payload. The type demonstrates how the value of a combat aircraft rests on the match between its design and the role commanders give it as a conflict changes.
