Development

## History

The Su-33 was developed as a carrier-based member of the Su-27 family. Its original Su-27K designation emphasised that origin, but operating from a ship required substantial changes. The first naval prototype flew on 17 August 1987. Testing included a land facility that reproduced carrier-deck conditions and later landings aboard an aircraft-carrying ship. For Soviet aviation, it was an important step toward using a large fighter from the limited space available at sea.

The wings and horizontal stabilisers gained folding mechanisms so the aircraft could be stored more compactly. The landing gear and airframe were strengthened for hard carrier recoveries, and an arresting hook was fitted. Canards and changes to the wing's high-lift devices helped at low speed. These features distinguish the Su-33 from a land-based Su-27 even where their outlines appear similar. The maritime environment also demanded structural protection and continuous attention from maintenance crews.

The Su-33 was intended mainly to defend a naval group against airborne threats. Its equipment and weapons evolved, but the central idea was to bring the capabilities of a heavy fighter to a carrier deck. A ski-jump launch and arrested landing impose limits on weight, fuel, and payload for a particular sortie. Published performance figures for an aircraft operating from a runway therefore do not automatically describe what can be achieved when launching from a ship.

The type's service is closely linked to the aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov and the training of naval aviators. A small production run meant that instruction and spare-parts support required special attention. After the Soviet Union dissolved, plans for naval aviation changed and the fleet remained limited. Carrier-capable MiG-29Ks were later acquired for related tasks, but they differed in size and operating concept.

The Su-33 demonstrates why a carrier variant is more than a land fighter fitted with a hook. Structure, low-speed aerodynamics, folding surfaces, crew preparation, and maintenance must all be reconsidered. Its career also shows a carrier aircraft's dependence on the particular ship and the wider naval aviation system. The fighter's capabilities make sense only alongside the practical conditions of launch, recovery, and support at sea.
