## History

The HAL Chetak is an Indian helicopter built under licence from the French Alouette III. An agreement with Sud Aviation helped Hindustan Aeronautics Limited learn helicopter production and train specialists for later programs. The first Chetak deliveries date to the mid-1960s. Similarity to Alouette III explains the design's origin, but the Indian production and service record deserves its own account.

According to HAL, Chetak belongs to a light two-tonne class and uses an Artouste III B turboshaft engine. A cabin spacious for its class allows passenger movement, small cargo, and medical duties. Each role changes the placement of people and equipment. A published seating figure does not mean all seats are available together with full fuel, a demanding route, and extra mission systems.

Military and government users have employed Chetak for liaison, patrol, search, and rescue. It could support units where an airplane could not land or was unnecessary. Compact size helps at restricted sites, but useful load and fuel still need careful calculation. Service with a military unit does not make the helicopter a dedicated attack platform.

At sea, a light aircraft can assist with search and communications, although shipboard conditions place special demands on crew preparation and maintenance. The cabin and instruments of a particular version must fit its assignment. Photographs of Chetak with different operators may not show the same equipment. Year, aircraft identity, and service affiliation are therefore useful checks for images and technical data.

The Chetak program became an important manufacturing school for HAL. The company expanded its helicopter division and later developed newer Dhruv, Rudra, and LCH aircraft. Those machines are not simple Chetak modifications; they have different engines, sizes, and missions. The early licensed project also matters for the technical skills and maintenance infrastructure it helped establish.

Chetak's long life reflects straightforward operation and useful versatility within its class. It should still be judged in its historical setting: modern navigation and protection systems and the greater payload of later types were not features of the original aircraft. A precise profile separates India's Chetak from the French original and from Cheetah, which derives from a different French helicopter.
