## History

The HAL Dhruv, also known as the Advanced Light Helicopter, is an Indian twin-engine helicopter for military and civil users. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited developed it as a domestic multirole platform able to work in the country's varied climates. The family includes several generations and versions. Dhruv by itself therefore does not identify the exact engines, instruments, or equipment of a particular aircraft.

HAL reports that deliveries of production helicopters began in the early 2000s. Certification of a military utility version was completed in 2002, with civil certification following later. The two paths demonstrate the basic design's breadth. Army, coast guard, and civilian requirements still differ, and their aircraft may have different undercarriages, cabin arrangements, and working equipment.

In a general-purpose role, Dhruv moves a small group, cargo, or medical personnel. It can support search, rescue, and liaison between units. High-altitude operation particularly demands adequate power margin, careful load calculation, and trained crews. A successful demonstration in difficult terrain does not mean the same useful load is available at sea level and in thin mountain air.

The manufacturer distinguishes Mk I, Mk II, Mk III, and the armed Mk IV. The latter is associated with the name Rudra and deserves its own profile. Assigning its weapons and targeting equipment to a transport Dhruv would be wrong. Specifications for one engine standard should likewise not be applied across every production batch. Technical changes improved parts of the service experience, while each version retained distinct limits and maintenance needs.

Practical value also depends on support. For armed forces, pilot training, repair facilities, and spare parts matter as much as top speed. A multirole helicopter often performs routine transport and supply work that is less visible in photographs than armed displays. A reliable history covers those everyday tasks without exaggerating what every aircraft can do.

Dhruv holds an important place in Indian helicopter manufacturing as a domestic platform from which several variants developed. Its history shows movement from general utility service toward specialized versions. A precise card identifies the series, operator, and confirmed equipment. That lets readers distinguish the basic Dhruv from the armed Rudra and other related aircraft.
