## History

The HAL Rudra is an armed Indian Dhruv helicopter variant also designated ALH Mk IV. It retains a multirole platform's origins but adds sights and weapons for support to land forces. Rudra should not be confused with a basic transport Dhruv: exterior similarity does not mean identical missions or equipment. Nor is it the same as the separately designed, dedicated LCH Prachand attack helicopter.

HAL developed Rudra for the Indian Army and Air Force. The manufacturer lists reconnaissance, escort, anti-tank work, and fire support among its roles. To perform them, crews must find an object, identify it, and coordinate action with people on the ground. Weapons are useful only alongside reliable communications and appropriate targeting equipment. Armament does not erase the design's utility-aircraft origins or its limitations.

HAL lists a turret gun, rocket system, air-to-air missiles, and observation devices among available equipment. The particular external load depends on the customer and mission. Every weapon type should not be described as a simultaneous standard fit on every Rudra. Additional weapons and sensors take weight that might otherwise support fuel or another payload and can affect flight range.

The variant gained an electro-optical unit, aiming equipment, and threat-warning systems. These devices help crews work by day and at night, but finding a target is not automatic. Weather, terrain, and aircrew training remain important. A comparison across Dhruv variants must distinguish the armed Mk IV from earlier transport standards without the same set of mission systems.

Indian army helicopters work in varied terrain. At altitude or in heat, load and hovering performance change, so an armed sortie needs careful fuel and weight planning. Escorting a transport group requires coordinated routes and timing, while reconnaissance requires timely information sharing. One maximum speed from a brochure cannot describe success in either task.

Rudra illustrates a way to modernize a utility helicopter by adding weapons and sensors. Its place in the catalog lies between the basic Dhruv and the more specialized LCH. A precise article names ALH Mk IV, the confirmed equipment fit, and the operator. That prevents the capabilities of a display aircraft from being applied to every helicopter in the series.
