It continued a coaxial line in which two main rotors turn in opposite directions and no separate tail rotor is needed. The arrangement is compact enough for deck operations and supported several variants on a common basis. The most important distinction is between the anti-submarine Ka-27PL and the search-and-rescue Ka-27PS. Development began as a replacement for the earlier Ka-25. A prototype flew in the 1970s, and service expanded in the early 1980s. Naval aviation needed accurate landings on restricted decks, reliable communication with ships, and operation above the sea. Those requirements shaped equipment as much as ordinary flight performance. The family's manufacture was associated with the Kumertau plant. Combining all these designations into a single “model” hides important differences. Upgrades also changed instruments and search capability within the Ka-27 line. The Ka-27's longevity reflects the Navy's need for a helicopter that can work from a vessel and perform demanding maritime tasks. Its importance lies in integration with a ship's crew as well as the coaxial rotors. A profile should distinguish anti-submarine and rescue versions and tie performance figures to a particular standard.
