Early documents used the designation GM-1. The project emerged when practical uses for helicopters were still taking shape and designers had to solve questions of stability, reliability, and manufacturing. The Mi-1 was neither a heavy transport nor an attack helicopter. Its value lay in smaller support tasks. The prototype first flew in 1948. Testing was followed by work to make the design suitable for production, which was established at several plants. The aircraft was also produced in Poland under the SM-1 designation. Different factories and variants mean that a photograph of one surviving helicopter does not necessarily show the original appearance of every aircraft in the family. Its layout combined a piston engine with one main rotor and one tail rotor. The small cabin could be used for liaison, observation, pilot training, and a limited number of passengers. Medical versions were adapted to remove patients. These roles did not require a large cargo hold, but did demand visibility, ease of boarding, and the ability to use an unprepared site. In military use, the Mi-1 could move officers, information, and medical support over shorter distances. Early helicopters nevertheless had significant limits in power, weather, and altitude. They should not be described as though they possessed the capabilities of later turboshaft aircraft. The Mi-1's practical importance was helping establish routine helicopter operations. Training and specialist versions appeared over time. Changes affected controls, cabin arrangements, and mission equipment. For pilots and maintainers, the Mi-1 became a school of experience. Lessons from its service supported the design of larger and more capable aircraft. Its influence on later Mi-2 and Mi-4 helicopters was not that their parts were identical, but that engineering and production practice developed. Today the Mi-1 is most often encountered in museums and historical accounts. It should be judged in the setting of the late 1940s and 1950s, when even a small production helicopter offered new options for liaison and medical aid. An account of a specific airframe needs its variant, place of manufacture, and service period.
