Development

## History

The Mi-10 is a specialist heavy skycrane developed by Mil's bureau from the Mi-6. Unlike an ordinary transport model, its layout was adapted to carry a large load beneath the fuselage. Tall landing gear left room for a platform or object below the aircraft. This helicopter addressed tasks in which an item's shape and dimensions mattered as much as its mass.

Development began in the late 1950s after the Mi-6's success. The Mi-10 prototype flew in 1960. The first production aircraft appeared several years later, after trials and factory preparation. The prototype's first flight and the first series flight are separate dates. Shared ancestry with the Mi-6 also does not make their missions identical.

The crane arrangement allowed objects too awkward for a normal cabin to be moved by air. It required secure attachment and careful control on the ground and in flight. Crews had to consider swinging, drag, route length, and the point where the load would be placed. A record load lifted by a specially prepared helicopter is not the permitted mass of every routine trip.

Military interest included the movement of special equipment and the rapid delivery of large systems without road access. Later variants were developed for electronic reconnaissance and other technical purposes. Civilian users employed the skycrane in construction and assembly work. Equipment and attachment methods changed with the task, making the variant suffix essential to an accurate account.

The Mi-10K with shorter landing gear was a distinct branch aimed at construction and installation. It differs from the original tall-legged machine and should not stand for all versions without explanation. The early Mi-10's long legs helped with certain loads but increased aerodynamic drag. Designers had to balance clearance beneath the aircraft against ease of flight.

The Mi-10 shows that helicopter lifting capability is not only a matter of engines and rotor. The position of an object relative to the airframe also matters. It occupied its own niche beside the Mi-6 rather than merely repeating its transport role. A profile of an individual airframe should separate the production crane, record-setting flights, and specialist variants. That gives dramatic photographs and cargo figures their correct context.
