## History

The Mi-14 is a maritime amphibious helicopter developed by Mil's bureau from the Mi-8 line. It was intended mainly for anti-submarine service, although rescue and specialist variants appeared later. Its most visible feature is a boat-shaped lower fuselage that allows water landings. This is more than an ordinary Mi-8 in new paint. Marine work required a different fuselage bottom, stability floats, and changes to several systems.

The prototype first flew on August 1, 1967. Production at the Kazan helicopter plant began in 1973. Development and service introduction took time because an anti-submarine aircraft had to combine flying qualities, search equipment, and operation above water. First flight, start of manufacture, and acceptance of a specific variant are different milestones.

The Mi-14PL carried equipment to search for underwater targets and worked with ships and shore units. A search depended on underwater conditions, weather, and available information. The helicopter could expand the area observed, but one sensor could never guarantee discovery of a submarine. Crews had to coordinate route, time on station, and return while accounting for fuel and changing sea conditions.

The Mi-14PS rescue version used amphibious features to aid people at sea. It could work from the water surface where a conventional helicopter might have to hover. A water landing still depended on sea state and aircraft condition. A separate Mi-14BT variant was built for towing minesweeping equipment. These versions had different equipment. All family functions should not be assigned to a single aircraft at once.

Its relationship with the Mi-8 can be seen in the powerplant and general upper fuselage. The sealed boat hull and side stabilizing structures nevertheless changed its purpose. Saltwater service also placed demands on maintenance and corrosion protection. A comparison with a land-based Mi-8 should account for the amphibian's specialized role as well as payload.

Mi-14s served with different operators and became an uncommon example of a large helicopter designed to land on water as a normal capability. The type shows how deeply a utility platform could be rebuilt for maritime work. A precise profile needs the PL, PS, or BT suffix and service period. Those letters explain why similar-looking aircraft had different workstations, sensors, and methods of use.
