# NHIndustries NH90

The NH90 is a European twin-engine helicopter developed by NHIndustries in tactical transport TTH and naval NFH lines.

## History

The NH90 is a European military helicopter developed by the NHIndustries consortium for several countries. The program has two principal lines: tactical transport TTH and naval NFH. They share a design foundation but perform different jobs and carry different systems. The transport variant moves units and cargo, while the naval aircraft works from ships on maritime missions. The name NH90 without a suffix does not fully describe an aircraft's role.

The project took shape as a joint European program in the 1990s. A prototype made a technical first flight in December 1995 and an official demonstration flight in February 1996. Testing examined vibration, engines, handling, and transmissions. Several development aircraft helped bring the common design to a standard suitable for different customers. Prototype history should not be confused with the later entry into service of individual national versions.

The NH90 has two turboshaft engines, composite elements, and digital flight controls. Its modern cockpit assists crews with navigation and missions, but does not eliminate weather or mechanical limits. The transport configuration has wide doors and a ramp to ease access to the cargo compartment. Seating capacity varies with layout and installed equipment.

The TTH is used for personnel movement, supplies, medical work, and support to special operations. The NFH needs systems for shipboard operation, observation, and anti-submarine tasks. Changing between those roles is not a matter of moving a few seats. Sensors, workstations, and maintenance requirements differ. Photographs need to be checked for the particular line and national fit shown.

International cooperation gave the program a broad customer base but made logistics and equipment standards more complex. Countries introduced aircraft at different times and selected their own systems. The entire NH90 fleet cannot therefore be assigned one readiness date or an identical fit. Actual useful load also depends on conditions and configuration.

NH90 history is an attempt to create one modern platform for land and naval aviation. Its significance lies in combining transport capability with a substantial shipboard branch. A precise profile identifies TTH or NFH, the operator, and version. That separates common structure from individual tasks and avoids mixing data from different national fleets.
