# TAI T625 Gökbey

## History

The T625 Gökbey is a Turkish general-purpose helicopter developed by Turkish Aerospace as a national program. It was designed to move people and equipment and support training and other government duties. Its purpose differs from the T129 ATAK attack helicopter: proximity in a manufacturer's catalogue does not imply a similar combat role. Gökbey is mainly about usable cabin space, operation in varied conditions, and support over a long service life.

Turkey's Defence Industry Agency links the program to the needs of armed forces and other authorities for a light utility aircraft. The manufacturer emphasizes day-and-night work in demanding climates and at altitude. Such requirements matter in a country with varied terrain, but published performance always depends on load and weather. A successful test flight is no promise of identical cabin capacity at every mountain landing site.

The aircraft has two engines, a modern cockpit, and flight automation. Versions for different customers may use different instruments and cabin layouts. On transport work, a crew moves people or supplies; a medical mission needs room for a patient and accompanying staff. Training places emphasis on visibility, repeatable procedures, and safe instructor operation. These roles should not be combined into one permanent equipment fit.

Certification was an important program milestone. In 2026 the Turkish civil aviation authority reported completion of the T625 type-certification process. That document concerns a checked standard and does not replace military acceptance requirements for every specialized configuration. Separating civil and military lines is especially important when assessing onboard systems and available missions.

Developing a national helicopter involves more than flying a prototype. It needs parts production, testing, crew training, service arrangements, and spare parts. Turkish Aerospace describes a maintenance-support plan for Gökbey. For an operator, that affects day-to-day aircraft availability. Planned versions should not be represented as helicopters already delivered and operating.

Gökbey reflects Turkey's effort to develop its own multirole platform for several state organizations. A sound profile gives the development stage, specific customer, and confirmed configuration. This separates real utility capabilities from future options and avoids confusing the type with the armed T129.
