It offered more cabin space and greater capability for tactical airlift. The prototype first flew in November 1997. Spain became the first military customer, followed by operators in other countries. The change from CASA C-295 to Airbus C295 reflects the evolution of the manufacturer, not the introduction of a wholly separate aircraft. The type is intended to move people and supplies between airfields where a heavy strategic freighter would be unnecessary. A high wing, two turboprop engines and a rear cargo ramp form a practical layout for this mission. Pallets, small vehicles and other equipment can enter through the ramp. It also supports the airborne delivery of personnel and freight. Use of a short or less developed runway depends on more than the aircraft's nominal size. Takeoff weight, surface condition, weather and the availability of an alternate field all have to be considered. The cabin can be arranged for different assignments. One flight may carry troops, another ordinary cargo, and another patients during a medical evacuation. Maritime patrol versions add sensors and operator stations for a substantially different mission. Some specialist equipment can be installed or removed without permanently changing the basic aircraft. The abilities of a patrol variant should not, however, be attributed to every transport C295. Equipment depends on the version and the customer's specification. The C295 illustrates how a successful transport design can be enlarged to cover a new range of work. It cannot replace a C-17-class aircraft when very heavy equipment must be lifted, but regular smaller loads may be carried more efficiently. A military operator values frequent supply, route flexibility and the ability to use one fleet for several missions. This explains the C295's use not just as a freighter but also as the basis for search, surveillance and other specialist aircraft. The model belongs to a longer story of European transport aviation. The earlier CN-235 supplied a proven foundation, while the C295 expanded carrying and operating capabilities. Comparisons between individual aircraft should account for production period, installed avionics and mission equipment.
