Its original requirement came from military logistics: equipment too big for smaller airlifters still needed to travel rapidly between distant regions. The aircraft later found an important civilian role. Industrial customers sometimes need to move a single large machine or assembly much faster than a ship can deliver it. The Ruslan's career therefore links strategic military lift with a specialized international cargo market. The An-124 first flew on 24 December 1982. It is a four-engine, high-wing aircraft built around an enormous freight compartment. Its most practical feature is access at both ends: the nose can open for front loading, while a rear ramp provides another route into the hold. Under suitable conditions this allows cargo to move through the aircraft and reduces time on the ground. Multiple landing-gear wheels spread the weight, and the aircraft can adjust its stance during loading. Size does not make it independent of airport infrastructure, however. Pavement strength, maneuvering space and suitable ground support still need careful assessment. The cargo hold was designed for objects outside the dimensions of ordinary freighters. Large industrial machines, energy equipment, aircraft components and military vehicles are typical categories. Allowable size and mass depend on the version, the route and the method of restraint. Planning starts well before departure. Engineers consider floor loading, balance, fuel and the capacity of every airport along the way. Even when a load fits inside the fuselage, bringing it to the aircraft and removing it at the destination may require separate equipment and detailed coordination. An-124 aircraft were built in Kyiv and Ulyanovsk. In the 1980s the type set notable records for heavy loads and long-distance flight, although its operational value was broader than records. Ruslans carried industrial structures, large machinery and supplies for emergency responses. After the Soviet Union dissolved, commercial operators used the An-124-100 for international outsized-cargo work. Military and civilian aircraft could differ in equipment and operating arrangements, so figures for one version should not automatically be applied to another. The Ruslan remains one of the best-known heavy transports because it combines a vast hold, loading from both ends and long-range capability. It should not be confused with the single An-225 Mriya: the An-124 is a distinct production type with its own service history.
