## History

The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a small twin-turboprop aircraft for short runways and remote regions. It was developed in Canada in the 1960s as a larger continuation of the single-engine DHC-3 Otter concept. The first flight took place on 20 May 1965. The aircraft is best known for civilian regional routes, yet its operating qualities also attracted government and military users. In a military aviation catalogue that mixed history matters: the Twin Otter was not created solely as a combat or army aircraft.

A high wing, two turboprops and fixed landing gear reflect the priority given to dependable work at small sites. Floats or skis can be fitted for particular routes. The aircraft can move people, urgent supplies, medical material and specialists where a major airport is unavailable. Its capacity is far below that of a heavy transport, but a modest load does not require a large airlift operation. A short takeoff run helps on restricted strips, while weight, wind and surface condition remain essential limits.

Military and government operators have used Twin Otters for links between bases, search work and support in northern regions. In Canada, the aircraft is particularly suited to places with long distances and sparse airfield infrastructure. The DHC-6 name nevertheless covers many series and configurations. A passenger machine, floatplane and specialist aircraft may differ in landing gear, cabin layout and installed systems. Specifications for one version cannot simply be assigned to all the others.

Production began in the 1960s, and the original line was later closed. The type subsequently returned to manufacture in updated form. This is an unusual example of a basic aircraft concept remaining valuable for many decades. The need did not disappear: remote communities, research stations and government services still require a transport able to fly frequent short legs and use small sites. Instruments and materials changed, but the underlying mission remained recognizable.

The Twin Otter shows that military logistics is not limited to moving tanks or entire units. A few people, instruments or spare parts may need to reach an isolated field quickly. On such routes a small, adaptable aircraft can be extremely useful. Its success comes from operational simplicity, flexible landing-gear options and suitability for harsh regions rather than record speed or maximum payload.
