In the late 1940s, the Air Force needed a way to move equipment between distant bases without dismantling every large vehicle before loading. Douglas drew on its earlier C-74 Globemaster but gave the new aircraft a much more capacious fuselage. The resulting C-124 became an important part of long-distance airlift before large jet transports entered regular service. The first flight took place on 27 November 1949. Production C-124A aircraft began arriving in 1950, and the family remained in production until 1955. The Globemaster II had a high wing and four piston engines. It was slow by the standards of later jets, yet its cargo space and loading arrangements made it unusually useful. Two large nose doors opened outward like a clamshell. Built-in hydraulic ramps allowed vehicles and heavy equipment to enter through the front. An elevator beneath the rear fuselage provided another way to handle freight. The hold could accommodate trucks, bulldozers, artillery and other bulky objects. It could also be arranged for large numbers of troops or for aeromedical evacuation. A double-deck cabin gave planners more flexibility when carrying people. These capabilities mattered at a time when flying a large vehicle required careful preparation and a suitable route. The C-124 did not make heavy logistics effortless: loading, maintaining four engines and operating across long distances still required substantial crews and support. Its value lay in making movements possible that would otherwise have demanded much slower surface transport. Globemaster IIs performed heavy airlift during the Korean War and later operations in Southeast Asia. Their work also extended far beyond combat support. Aircraft supplied Antarctic activities, helped evacuate refugees and carried relief after natural disasters. Such missions showed why the combination of cargo volume and loading access mattered even when civilian agencies were the eventual beneficiaries. Crews nicknamed the aircraft “Old Shakey,” a reference associated with its noticeable vibration. The name became part of the type's service identity. As faster jet transports took over strategic routes, many C-124s moved to the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard. The final aircraft left active service in 1974. The type occupies a distinct position in airlift history. It belonged to the last generation of very large piston-powered transports, yet it already addressed a modern requirement: moving oversized equipment and personnel around the world on short notice.
