Forty years of Smart Services: how flying-hour-based coverage works and why it is different from aircraft availability.

In October 2026, Bombardier celebrated 40 years of support programs that have evolved from Smart Parts. According to the company, today more than 1,500 aircraft participate in Smart Services, the total flight time of which within the programs has exceeded 11 million hours. The anniversary was an occasion to recall the model of covering certain service costs through payments associated with flight hours.

For the owner of a business aircraft, this is a matter of organizing costs during operation. The program may make some costs more predictable, but it does not mean that all service becomes free or that technical events disappear. To understand its significance, you need to separate the cost of work, the amount of coverage and the actual readiness of the aircraft for the next flight.

## Why expenses don't follow a straight line

An aircraft can perform its usual schedule for several months, and then require work that differs markedly in cost and duration. This is due to different service periods and the condition of the components. Some events are determined by the calendar, others by flying hours or cycles, and others arise from the results of a check. Therefore, the same number of flights does not guarantee the same costs every month.

This unevenness makes planning difficult. The annual budget may look reasonable on average, but a particular period will require a larger amount. At the same time, you cannot postpone necessary work for the sake of a beautiful expense schedule. Financial planning should adapt to technical requirements, not replace them.

Maintenance-support programmes offer another way to spread certain costs. Payments linked to aircraft use can be planned more steadily than occasional large bills. The programme’s name alone does not identify the work covered, the applicable restrictions or the items excluded from the agreement. Those details must be assessed in the contract.

## Flight hour as a unit of calculation

The connection of payment with flight hours makes the expense clear for planning: when activity changes, the corresponding part of the accruals changes. But the technical life of an aircraft is not measured only by time in the air. Different components may have scheduling constraints, cycle requirements, and operating conditions. Therefore, the tariff unit and physical wear and tear are not the same quantity.

Let's consider hypothetical aircraft with the same annual flight time. One operates many short flights, the other – fewer long ones. The number of takeoffs and landings varies, and with it individual maintenance needs may vary. This example illustrates why it is important to describe the operating profile when evaluating a program rather than limiting it to a single total of hours per year.

Bombardier's published materials mention various Smart Services options, including Elite and Defense. They are intended for different tasks and should not be perceived as the same package with different names. For a specific aircraft, the applicable option, its content and conditions of participation, confirmed in the documents, are essential.

## Covering expenses and organizing work

When a program includes a certain event, this answers the question of how to allocate the associated costs. But the aircraft still needs to be inspected, serviced and returned to service according to the established procedure. It will require personnel, parts and time. Financial coverage alone does not turn a complex technical task into an instant transaction.

For example, a hypothetical replacement of a component may be included in the agreement, but implementation is dependent on the availability of the required item and the availability of a service location. The issue of delivery and work planning is addressed separately. Therefore, it is useful to consider two chains simultaneously: who pays for the event and how it will be carried out in practice.

This separation helps you ask meaningful questions. What actions are needed in case of a malfunction far from the base? Who approves the work? What information must the operator provide? How is completion confirmed? The answers allow you to evaluate the actual organization of support, and not just the attractiveness of the general payment formula.

## Documents retain meaning

A technical history of the aircraft is required regardless of the method of payment for maintenance. Records show what work has been completed, what components have been installed and what deadlines remain current. The support program does not replace this information. On the contrary, accurate accounting helps to correctly determine the applicability of the work and coordinate further actions.

The connection between an event and a specific aircraft configuration is especially important. Two aircraft of the same family may have different equipment and modification history. Therefore, maintenance cannot be planned based on the generic model name alone. The data required is that of the aircraft that is being operated and participating in the program.

For the owner, clear reporting connects the technical and financial sides. You can see why the expense occurred, what event it accompanies, and what changed after the work was completed. This information is more useful than a list of payments without context. It helps to understand the condition of the asset and plan the use of the aircraft for the following periods.

## What to compare when choosing a form of support

The comparison starts with the same set of problems. If one option includes a broader list of events, it is incorrect to compare its price with a narrow package without explanation. It is necessary to separately indicate the included work, exceptions and expenses that the operator in any case bears independently. Only after this the totals become meaningful.

The comparison horizon is no less important. A short period without major technical events may give the impression that self-payment is always better. A period with several significant works can show the opposite. No single year automatically describes the entire service life. The assessment requires a realistic scenario that takes into account the condition of the specific aircraft.

This is not a universal recommendation to choose a specific contract. The importance of predictability, flexibility and service mix varies among owners. Some people actively use the plane, others fly irregularly. A program makes practical sense when its conditions match this profile, and not because another operator uses a similar solution.

## Aircraft availability involves more than the maintenance budget

Even well-organized maintenance is only part of being prepared for a trip. What is needed is a crew, a consistent schedule, suitable airfields and the ability to fly the route under expected conditions. Therefore, participation in the support program does not guarantee availability of the aircraft at any time. It solves a certain part of the operational problem, and not all its components.

Let’s imagine a hypothetical month in which an important trip coincided with pre-planned work. Predictable cost does not eliminate calendar conflict. It needs to be resolved organizationally: adjust the schedule, discuss availability in advance, or prepare another transport option. The earlier the technical plan is linked to the travel plan, the fewer unexpected restrictions there are for passengers.

Therefore, good support management includes constant communication. The owner reports the expected activity, the operator takes it into account in the schedule, and the technical service clarifies upcoming events. The cost recovery program becomes part of this system. Isolated from people and processes, it cannot provide all the expected results.

## What the fortieth anniversary tells us

The Smart Services anniversary reflects the long-term evolution of the existing fleet support model. For the airline industry, this is an important reminder: the life cycle of an aircraft extends well beyond the point of sale and involves many repetitive technical decisions. The way these decisions are organized affects the predictability of operation no less than the individual characteristics of the new aircraft.

Participation and flight hours are representative of the size of the program according to the manufacturer, but do not guarantee the same experience for each owner. Practical assessment still starts with a specific aircraft and specific conditions. The benefit is a clear understanding of the covered events, the work order, and the operator's remaining obligations. This is what turns the general idea of support into a working tool of operation.

Before comparing options, it is also useful to clarify the transition between them: changing activity or ownership may require separate agreement on the terms of participation.
