# Garuda Indonesia appoints MTU to maintain GE90 engines for its Boeing 777-300ER fleet

Garuda Indonesia has agreed with MTU to service the GE90-115B for three years. What is known about the agreement and how engine repairs relate to fleet readiness.

Garuda Indonesia and MTU Maintenance have entered into a three-year maintenance agreement for the GE90-115B engines. It was announced on October 26, 2026. We are talking about the power plants of the Boeing 777-300ER; the message indicates a fleet of eight such aircraft. Maintenance, repairs and overhauls are provided at MTU's site in Hannover. The company's Singapore arm will be able to further assist with engine leasing and asset management as required.

The cost of the agreement and the schedule of individual shop visits were not disclosed. Therefore, the news does not allow us to calculate the costs of each aircraft or determine which aircraft will be the first to receive serviced engines. Its significance lies in organizing support for the long-haul fleet. The design of the GE90 itself and the difference between repairing a removed unit, working directly on the aircraft, and providing a spare-engine pool will help you understand this.

## What engine is behind the GE90 designation?

The GE90 is a family of large high-bypass turbofan engines. The GE90-115B powers long-haul Boeing 777 variants, including the 777-300ER. In the core, compressors raise air pressure, combustion adds energy, and turbine stages extract power to drive the compressors and fan. The fan provides a substantial share of the engine’s thrust.

A characteristic feature of the family is composite fan blades. But servicing a large engine is not limited to checking the most visible component. Inside there are compressor and turbine stages, shafts, bearings, seals and systems that provide control, fuel supply and lubrication. Each group of parts has its own operating conditions. Therefore, the general phrase “GE90 repair” can mean tasks that differ significantly in depth and duration.

## Why is it not enough to know the number of aircraft?

Eight twin-engine aircraft mean sixteen standard engine locations. This is a simple design characteristic and not a published repair program size. It cannot be used to deduce the number of spare units, the number of future removals, or the amount of work under the contract. One engine may require several different interventions over the period under review, while another may need to remain on the wing while performing the required maintenance.

Individual history is important for planning. Engines of the same type may differ in operating hours, installed parts, inspection results and previously performed modifications. Even two units on the same aircraft do not necessarily have the same history. Therefore, it makes more sense to think of a maintenance program as a sequence of events with specific serial numbers, rather than sending the entire fleet to one maintenance facility at once.

## What kind of work is possible on the wing?

Some inspections and repairs can be performed without sending the entire engine to a large repair facility. This depends on the nature of the fault, site availability, equipment capabilities and approved procedures. An on-site technical team can perform scheduled diagnostics or replace an accessible component. Given the right amount of work, this format reduces the number of transportation stages and allows you to keep the engine on the plane.

However, access from the outside is limited by the structure. Major tampering with internal modules may require removal and disassembly. The solution is not determined by the desire to reduce downtime alone: it must correspond to the technical condition and acceptable procedures. The choice between working on the wing and sending it to the shop is therefore an engineering challenge. Logistics convenience is taken into account after the necessary and permitted actions are determined.

## What happens during shop repairs

The repair visit begins with setting and checking the initial data. Further, the actual condition is clarified during inspections and disassembly to the prescribed extent. Some parts are retained, others are repaired or replaced. The term overhaul denotes a certain amount of restoration according to documentation, but in everyday news the word “repair” is used much more broadly. To consider any visit a complete overhaul of the engine down to the last element would be inaccurate.

Engine condition may require adjustments to the original plan. For example, wear discovered during access to internal parts should be assessed, although it was not visible from the outside. This is a general example of how to organize repairs and is not specific to Garuda engines. He explains why the enterprise and the customer agree on the scope of work and materials, and the estimated time for the return of the unit may depend on the results of the defect.

## Why the service lives of individual parts matter

An engine does not have a single indicator that equally describes the service life of all its elements. Some parts have established service life limitations. These critical components may include disks, shafts, and other rotating parts. For them, identification and a traceable history of use are important. The preserved appearance gives no reason to ignore the established service life limitation.

When describing operating hours, a distinction is made between hours and cycles. A long flight adds more hours to the clock than a short flight, but both involve takeoff and landing. The exact accounting method is determined by the documentation. Therefore, the same total flight time of two engines does not mean the same remaining use of each service life component.

This distinguishes service life accounting from assessment of current characteristics. An engine may exhibit normal performance but have a component approaching its limit. Conversely, deterioration in performance does not necessarily mean that all parts have exhausted their service life at the same time. The technical program combines different bases for work. After repair, the history of the unit continues: the concept “refurbished” does not equate to the statement that every part of it has become new.

## How the replacement engine relates to the schedule

While one unit is in the shop, a compatible replacement engine can allow the aircraft to return to flight. But the replacement process itself requires preparation: ready-made equipment, appropriate documentation, transportation, installation and required checks are needed. The opportunity to rent an engine is useful precisely as part of this chain. It does not mean that any unit can be immediately installed on any Boeing 777.

Let's imagine a hypothetical aircraft whose engine was removed before the start of a busy week. If a suitable replacement is prepared in advance, the duration of the repair shop and the time the aircraft will be unavailable can vary greatly. If there is no replacement, the wait becomes part of the fleet constraint. This is an illustration of the mechanism, not a forecast for Garuda: the published agreement does not contain details to promise a specific reduction in downtime or flight cancellations.

## A new agreement does not necessarily replace an existing one

Garuda has another publicly announced GE90 agreement. On 23 September 2026, HAECO announced a contract covering three performance-restoration shop visits through 2028. That context matters when reading the October news: appointing MTU cannot automatically be described as abandoning another provider or assigning every GE90 task to a single contractor. The division of work needs its own evidence.

Different contracts may cover specific events, specific units and different periods. The detailed distribution of tasks in this case has not been publicly disclosed. Service from multiple suppliers also does not mean that one engine is undergoing the same repair in two places at the same time. It is necessary to distinguish between the entire fleet, a specific serial number and a specific task: it is at this level that the actual scope of obligations of each party becomes clear.

## What can be assessed after work begins

Engine availability, the full service cycle and planning for return to the aircraft all matter operationally. Time spent inside the shop alone does not describe the complete period. Transport, acceptance, records checks and installation also take place before and after the shop visit. Comparing providers or contracts using one turnaround figure is misleading unless the measurement boundaries are defined.

The practical result for passengers is manifested through the airline's ability to use the planned fleet. But no engine repair contract eliminates weather, airport restrictions or the need to maintain other systems. The signed agreement should be understood as a concrete step towards organizing support for the GE90-115B. Broader conclusions about fleet readiness and schedule changes will require follow-up operational data, which is not included in the announcement.
