# HondaJet APMG S receives European approval

APMG S has received EASA validation, bringing avionics updates, steering assistance and a higher maximum take-off weight to eligible earlier HondaJets.

Honda Aircraft announced the validation of the APMG S package by the European agency EASA. Posted October 15, 2026. The update is intended for HondaJet Classic and aircraft with the previous APMG package; it expands the possibilities for modernizing existing aircraft on the European market.

The package includes updated avionics hardware and software, the ASAS steering-assistance system, graphical weight-and-balance calculations and a maximum take-off weight increase of 300 pounds, approximately 136 kilograms. These are defined changes to an existing aircraft rather than the introduction of a new model. Their applicability must be checked for the individual aircraft and its approved configuration.

## What does validation mean for an existing fleet?

Aircraft of the same family can operate in different countries, which have their own procedures for recognizing design changes. Therefore, the presence of an upgrade package in one market does not automatically mean it is available everywhere. European approval removes the relevant barrier to the use of APMG S where it applies to a specific registered aircraft.

For the owner, this turns the technical proposal into a more defined option for the development of the aircraft. But between the announcement and the return of the aircraft to service, work remains: checking applicability, agreeing on the scope of installation, preparing documentation and performing the necessary procedures. The update must correspond to the original condition of the aircraft, and not just the family name on the advertising brochure.

It is useful to think of modernization as a change in a set of proven characteristics. After it, the crew works with the updated configuration and its documents. You cannot simply continue to use the same numbers where they have changed, or independently extend the new value to a similar aircraft. It is the connection between the physical modification, records and operational information that makes the update complete.

## Additional weight does not equal additional passengers

An increase in maximum take-off weight of approximately 136 kilograms looks like a simple numerical advantage. However, this amount does not automatically translate into the same increase in baggage on every route. When preparing a flight, the actual empty weight of the aircraft, fuel, people, luggage and restrictions associated with specific take-off and landing conditions are taken into account.

A hypothetical example helps to see the difference. Let's say two aircraft have the same maximum take-off weight, but one is equipped with a heavier interior. All other things being equal, it will have less reserve for payload and fuel. If the route requires additional fuel, part of the available mass will be occupied by it. The number of seats alone does not reveal this balance.

On a short route, additional reserve may be used differently than on a long route. In one case it is more useful to carry more luggage, in another - to maintain the required fuel supply. The actual result is determined by calculation for the flight. Therefore, a correct description of the APMG S speaks of expanded loading capabilities, but does not promise the same increase in range or capacity under all circumstances.

## Why is mass related to centre of gravity?

Equal total loads can affect an aircraft differently when placed in different positions. Centre of gravity describes where the aircraft’s overall mass acts, rather than simply how many kilograms it carries. A weight-and-balance assessment combines the quantities and positions of people, baggage, fuel and equipment. The result shows whether the proposed loading remains within the approved envelope.

Consider twenty kilograms of equipment placed in different compartments. Its effect depends on the distance from the relevant reference point as well as its mass. This is ordinary mechanics: a load’s influence depends on weight and moment arm. Empty cabin space is therefore not automatically an approved place to stow an item without checking.

A graphical display makes the calculation and its position within the limits easier to understand. It cannot, however, know the actual baggage weight without accurate input. The system’s usefulness comes from presenting information clearly and helping the pilot assess the result. It does not remove the need to check the loading itself.

## Updating the computing part of the cockpit

Avionics includes not only displays, but also computing devices, software and communications with other systems. More modern hardware can support new features and processing. For the user, this is manifested through the speed of work, accessible pages and the way information is presented. At the same time, externally similar screens do not guarantee the same functionality.

Upgrading requires familiarity with workflow changes. Even a useful feature first becomes a new element to understand. Where is the result displayed, what data is required, what confirms the correctness of the input? If the pilot only knows the location of the button, but not the meaning of the page, interface usability has not yet become a sustainable skill.

The transition is best thought of as a short cycle of learning: learning, practicing, and testing understanding. In a quiet learning environment, it is easier to see the differences with the old configuration. This knowledge is then consolidated in work according to established procedures. What is important is not the certainty that the system is newer, but clarity about how exactly it now helps the crew.

## Ground steering also matters in operation

ASAS assists aircraft steering on the ground. That is distinct from route navigation or altitude control in flight. During taxi, wind, speed, wheel traction and pilot input all affect aircraft behaviour. The system’s purpose and limitations therefore need to be understood within the ground-operating procedures for the particular aircraft.

It is especially important not to transfer the general promise of improved handling to all possible lane conditions. Dry surfaces, water, snow and pollution create different conditions. Technical improvements do not replace the need to take into account the actual situation. Its capabilities are assessed together with other characteristics of the aircraft and the intended operating procedures.

The ground stage often seems less challenging than flying because the speed is lower. But the space is limited by taxiways, markings, other aircraft and equipment. A clear understanding of the aircraft's behavior helps the crew work consistently. In this sense, ground control improvements complement the overall upgrade, even if they're harder to show off with a flashy cockpit photo.

## How to evaluate an updated aircraft

When comparing offers on the secondary market, it is important to clarify the actual installed configuration. The words "updated" or "modernized" can describe completely different work: interior, communications, avionics or changes in operational characteristics. It is more convenient to separate them by content and check the documentary evidence of each item that is essential for the intended use.

It is also necessary to take into account the time when the aircraft will be unavailable due to work. Several beneficial changes can be discussed during a single service visit, but their compatibility and duration are determined separately. The mere installation of APMG S does not reveal anything about the condition of the upholstery, service history or remaining life of other components of a particular aircraft.

European validation expands choice for early HondaJet owners. Its practical significance lies in the ability to obtain a certain set of modern functions while maintaining the existing aircraft. It is reasonable to evaluate the result through real tasks: loading, crew comfort and availability of the necessary modes. Then the package becomes a clear technical change, and not an abstract promise of an “almost new” aircraft.

For a future flight, the data of the exact aircraft that will carry it out remains decisive. The proven configuration allows us to link the expectations of passengers with the calculations of the crew and the capabilities of the aircraft. The more accurately these initial conditions are known, the more useful the performance gains are and the less room there is for erroneous assumptions when planning a trip.

When purchasing, information about the modernization performed should be checked with the technical records of the aircraft.
