## Life and work in aviation

Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922), best known for communications research, also took part in early aviation experiments. In Canada, he studied kites and supported the Aerial Experiment Association. With its members, he explored stable, controllable aircraft. His aviation legacy includes organising a research team, experimental designs and the Silver Dart flight, a milestone in Canadian history.

## Studies outside the usual biography

Bell worked on various technical tasks, including devices capable of being kept in the air stream. His interest in tetrahedral kites was associated with the search for a light spatial structure. The snake, glider and aircraft with the engine solve different problems, so such experiments can not be automatically called full-fledged motor flights. They formed the research basis for further experiments of the group.

## Aerial Experiment Association

In 1907, the Aerial Experiment Association was formed, bringing together Bella, Glenn Curtiss, Frederick Baldwin, John McCardy, and Thomas Selfridge. Mabel Bell provided financial support. The way of work was important: several specialists could compare solutions and consistently test devices. The history of the association shows that cooperation and organization of the experiment were no less important than the individual invention of an individual part.

## Silver Dart in Canada

On 23 February 1909, John McCardy lifted the Silver Dart into the air over the frozen surface off Baddeck, Nova Scotia. The flight became an important event of aviation development in Canada. Bell was a member of the research program, but the pilot in this demonstration was McCurdy. Separation of these roles allows you to correctly describe the contribution of the organizer, designers and the person who directly controlled the apparatus.

## The team as a result of the study

The activities of the Aerial Experiment Association were short-lived, but gave participants the experience that they developed further. Curtiss built aircraft manufacturing, McCurdy continued his aviation career, and Bell's legacy has been preserved in the history of the Baddeck Research Center. For the aviation biography of Bell, the main thing is not to transfer to the plane his fame as the inventor of the phone, but to see specific experiments, team support and participation in the development of new structures.

## How the wing, stability and design are related

The aircraft must simultaneously create lift, overcome resistance and maintain control. A good wing does not solve all problems by itself. Suitable controls are required, and the structure and distribution of the mass is strong enough. Therefore, the history of the aviation project is useful to consider as the coordination of several functions. Changing one element affects the rest: a heavier vehicle requires different flight conditions, and a new engine can change the layout and behavior of the machine.

The glider helps to explore the flight without its own power plant. It uses altitude stock and movement relative to air; duration depends on design and atmospheric conditions. Early experiments allowed us to study the stability and actions of the pilot before the advent of a suitable engine. At the same time, a small model does not automatically confirm the behavior of a full-size machine. To go to the apparatus with a person, separate strength calculations, manufacturing and practical verification under the appropriate load are needed.

The material is selected taking into account the mass, strength, manufacture and maintenance. Wood, metal alloys and composites have different joining properties and technologies. The new design may be promising, but its advantages need to be confirmed by tests. The name of the material is not a guarantee of safety or economy. Important are the power kit layout, the quality of the parts and how the body perceives real loads during operation, including repeated takeoffs and landings.

The design result consists of calculations, manufacture, ground inspection and flight observations. The engineering school passes on ways to solve problems to the next generation, not just the appearance of the aircraft. When studying the biography, it is useful to associate projects with their purpose: the training machine, transport and experimental glider require different compromises. So it is clearer why two apparently similar designs can have a completely different operational role and history of development.
