# Ferdinand von Zeppelin — biography and achievementsFerdinand von Zeppelin — biography and achievements

Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838–1917) was the German developer and organiser of a rigid-airship programme. His aircraft used large frameworks containing gas compartments. The first LZ 1 rose above Lake Constance in 1900. Zeppelin developed the design as well as industrial and public support for the project.

## Life and work in aviation

Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838–1917) was a German organizer and developer of a program of rigid airships. Its devices were characterized by a large spatial framework, inside of which gas compartments were located. The first LZ 1 flew over Lake Constance in 1900. Zeppelin was engaged not only in the design, but also in the creation of industrial and public support for the project. He died before the establishment of the Nazi regime; the later political history of Germany cannot be automatically transferred to his personal biography.

## The idea of rigid construction

In a rigid airship, the frame sets the shape, and the lifting gas is in separate internal shells. Such a layout allowed to build large devices with engines and gondolas located outside. She made serious demands on mass and strength. The development of Zeppelin was one way to solve this problem, along with soft and semi-rigid airships of other designers.

## First LZ 1

On July 2, 1900, LZ 1 made its first flight over Lake Constance. The project still required improvements, so one launch did not mean the completion of the creation of reliable air transport. The tests helped to assess the control, the power plant and the behavior of a large body. It is important to maintain the connection of the biography with this early period: further famous Zeppelin airships were created on the basis of the consistent development of the program.

## Enterprise and passenger flights

After difficulties and accidents, Zeppelin continued to seek support for production. The emergence of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin and DELAG helped move to the operation of passenger airships. Transportation required ground teams, hangars, weather planning, and regular maintenance. This organizational side explains why Zeppelin’s contribution is not limited to the appearance of the apparatus: he participated in the construction of the whole system of its application.

## Personal work and later family

Zeppelin died in 1917. LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin and LZ 129 Hindenburg appeared much later, so they can not be called machines, which he personally led in flight or in the final development. His legacy consists of an early program of rigid airships and an established industrial school. Such a distinction is especially important when the fame of the later apparatus eclipses the real dates of the life of the founder of the trend.

## How airship is different from a balloon

The airship combines the lifting power of the gas shell with its own power plant and control. Unlike a free ball, it can change the movement relative to the air mass. Capabilities depend on thrust, wind, and hull arrangement. Therefore, the presence of the engine does not mean freedom to fly under any atmospheric conditions. For the route, it is required to coordinate the mass, fuel reserve, control and ground points suitable for working with a large apparatus.

The rigid airship has a frame that supports the shape of the hull, and separate gas volumes inside. This scheme differs from the soft shell, which retains its shape due to internal pressure. The frame adds design tasks and mass, but allows you to organize a large body. Comparison of different types must be carried out according to purpose and era. One successful experience does not confirm the suitability of any scheme for a passenger flight or a long flight.

For a large airship, ground infrastructure is part of the technical system. We need storage, maintenance, fuel and trained people for operations near the ground. The size of the device affects all this before the start of the flight. The organizer should take into account not only the ability to stay in the air, but also the ability to regularly start and take the car. Therefore, the development of the aeronautics company can not be described only through the characteristics of one aircraft.

The historical name in the title of the series is not equal to the founder's personal participation in each late project. The corporation could continue to work after his death, use new technologies and solve other problems. For the biography, specific dates and development of the period of life are important. This distinction is especially useful in the long history of manufacturers: it retains the value of the original engineering idea and at the same time shows the real contribution of subsequent teams and managers.
