# Joseph-Michel Montgolfier — biography and achievementsJoseph-Michel Montgolfier — biography and achievements

Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (1740–1810) was a French inventor who developed the hot-air balloon with his brother Étienne. Their 1783 experiments opened a new era of ballooning, allowing people to rise in free flight. Joseph focused on experiments with heated-air envelopes. His life belongs to lighter-than-air history, preceding aeroplanes by more than a century.

## Life and work in aviation

Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (1740–1810) was a French inventor who developed the hot-air balloon with his brother Étienne. Their 1783 experiments opened a new era of ballooning, allowing people to rise in free flight. Joseph focused on experiments with heated-air envelopes. His life belongs to lighter-than-air history, preceding aeroplanes by more than a century.

## From paper shell to balloon

Family paper production gave the brothers experience with lightweight materials. Joseph experimented with shells that were raised by heating the air inside. The real principle is explained by the difference in density: heated air under suitable conditions is lighter than the surrounding. In the early explanations of the inventors there were misconceptions about the special lifting property of smoke, but the experiments themselves gave the observed technical result.

## Demonstration in Annona

On June 4, 1783, the brothers publicly demonstrated an unmanned thermal balloon at Annona. For others, this was an unusual proof of the possibility of lifting a relatively large structure. Success drew attention to the invention and helped further demonstrations. It is important to distinguish between this experience and the subsequent flight of people: the June apparatus proved the efficiency of the principle, and the tasks of passenger flight still had to be solved.

## Transition to human flight

After experiments with unmanned balloons and demonstrations with animals took place a free flight of people in Paris on November 21, 1783. Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlande were on board. Joseph and Etienne were the creators of the technique, but not the passengers of this first free manned flight. For an accurate historical account, engineering and flight roles should be named separately.

## Importance of Thermal Aeronautics

Montgolfier maintains a connection with the original principle today: the shell retains the heated air, and the change in temperature affects the rise. At the same time, early balloons could not fly against the wind. Joseph's story helps to see the difference between climbing and running the route. Its result gave people a practical opportunity to be in the air, and the issues of navigation and controlled movement developed in the next generations of devices.

## Airlifting and flight control

The balloon rises due to the difference in gas density inside the shell and the surrounding air. At the thermal balloon, this difference creates heated air, at the gas - another filling gas. Such a physical scheme is different from the work of the aircraft wing. For early experiments, the shell, the method of filling and the ability of the structure to withstand the load were important. The first successful climb did not yet mean the ability to freely choose the direction of the route.

The free balloon is mostly moved along with the air mass. A change in altitude may allow the use of the wind of another direction, but does not give control equal to the aircraft. Therefore, the altitude, range and accuracy of arrival are different issues. Historical achievement should be described with an indication of the type of apparatus and the conditions of experience. Otherwise, a controlled airship, a tethered ball and free aeronautics are mistakenly turned into the same technique.

When demonstrating the new device, the observers had to make sure that the shell retains its shape and is able to carry the load. Tests of models, animals and humans were related to different stages of development. They can not be combined with one date without explanation. The work of manufacturers and researchers complemented the actions of the participants in the flight. The transition to a larger shell required solving new issues of materials and assembly, as the increase in size changed the mass and impact loads.

Air travel has become an independent part of aviation history. Its development gave experience with the atmosphere, altitude, observation and organization of flights. This experience should not be considered a simple unsuccessful attempt to build an aircraft: the balloon uses a different principle and has its own tasks. When reading inventors' biographies, it is useful to distinguish between a physical idea, a public demonstration, and exploitation. Between the first experience and regular use is usually a long-term improvement of technology.
