## Life and work in aviation

Vladimir Komarov (1927–1967) was a Soviet military pilot, engineer and cosmonaut. In 1964, he commanded Voskhod 1, the first spacecraft with a three-person crew. His second flight, Soyuz 1, ended tragically during return in April 1967. His biography traces the transition from aviation service to the inherently experimental work of early crewed spacecraft.

## Pilot and Engineer

Komarov received military flight training and engineering education, then entered the first detachment of cosmonauts. In the new profession, it was necessary to understand not only the management, but also the structure of the ship. The skills of the aviation service were supplemented by the training of the space program. Working with limited information and established procedures required coordinated training of crew and ground support specialists.

## Commander of Voskhod-1

In October 1964, Komarov went into space with Konstantin Feoktistov and Boris Egorov. It was the first multi-seat manned ship. The commander, the engineer and the doctor performed different duties in the same cabin. The composition of the crew showed the expansion of space tasks: in addition to the flight itself, the program provided for technical and medical observations by several trained specialists.

## The first “union” with a person

On April 23, 1967, Komarov started on Soyuz-1. It was the first manned flight of a new family ship. During the expedition, technical problems arose, and during the return, the parachute system failed, which led to the death of the astronaut. The description of the event requires accuracy: the subsequent long-term operation of the family does not cancel the difficulties of its initial stage.

## Memory and development of the program

Komarov was twice a Hero of the Soviet Union. His professional history includes two different ships and two programs. The tragedy became part of the process of revising the technique and preparing the next flights. Unproven stories about negotiations should not replace documented information. The contribution of the astronaut is associated with the tasks performed and the responsibility of the commander in early manned cosmonautics.

## Aviation and manned space flight

The aviation experience helped the first cosmonauts and astronauts to work with technology and perform complex procedures. However, the spacecraft is not just a plane at a higher altitude. For orbital motion, an appropriate speed is required, and return is associated with braking and heating protection. Therefore, training programs added new disciplines. The pilot had to understand the ship, the conditions of weightlessness and the operation of the ground support system, which differed from the usual aviation departure.

The suborbital route lifts the device into the cosmic region without a complete orbit around the Earth. Orbital expedition involves movement around the planet. Length alone is not the only difference: the speed and sequence of return change. These concepts help accurately describe the first flights of different countries. The achievement of one participant should not be substituted for another, even when the events occurred close in time and belonged to one generation of space technology.

The ship depends on communication, power, control, and systems supporting human conditions. A separate node can be developed by another organization, so the authorship of the program is collective. The commander, flight engineer and scientific specialist perform different duties, and the composition of the crew changes between missions. The history of a particular flight should preserve these roles. It shows what tasks the participant actually solved, and not just lists the names of people who were near the ship.

Ground training includes the study of equipment and the development of the envisaged actions. Astronauts are trained as a crew, agreeing on the distribution of work. With the development of stations and reusable ships, scientific programs and the duration of stay have expanded. The biography of the participant allows you to compare generations of technology, but does not make him the author of all subsequent missions. To understand the heritage, specific flights, duties and transfer of experience to those who prepared and performed the following expeditions are important.
