# Aircraft design engineerAircraft design engineer

Develops aircraft design and systems, participates in calculations, tests and improvement of projects.

## Work and training

The designer works with requirements, calculation models and technical solutions. Some specialists are engaged in aerodynamics, others - strength, engines or control systems. Designing requires joint work: changing one part can affect the mass and characteristics of the entire aircraft.

The training is based on mathematics, physics and engineering disciplines. Useful design work, experimental practice and the ability to explain the results of calculations. A specific set of tools depends on the specialization. When choosing a direction, it is worth studying the curriculum and real tasks of enterprises where you can practice.

## From requirements to design

The work of the engineer begins with the task: what mass should be transported, at what distance, from what airfield and in what conditions. Requirements turn into restrictions on design, power plant, systems and operation. Improving one parameter can make the other worse, so design is about choosing a reasonable compromise.

The business jet shows this connection well. A more spacious cabin increases size and weight; additional fuel reserves affect the payload; high speed imposes its requirements on the wing and engines. The engineer evaluates the aircraft as an interconnected system, not as a set of beautiful characteristics.

## Main specializations

Aerodynamics deals with air flow and emergent forces. Strength and construction - loads, materials and resource. Other areas cover engines, on-board systems, control, production and testing. In a large project, these teams must agree on results and changes.

The universal name “aviation engineer” hides different jobs. One specialist calculates the design element, another prepares a test program, a third accompanies the production or analyzes the operation data. When choosing training, it is useful to find out what real tasks graduates of a particular program perform.

## Calculation, experiment and test

The computer model helps to compare solutions and investigate design behavior. The result depends on the assumptions, the quality of the data and the applicability of the method. Therefore, the calculation is checked by experiments, measurements and tests to the extent necessary for the corresponding task.

Ground tests and flight studies answer different questions. It is important to determine in advance which result is considered to confirm the requirement and how uncertainty is fixed. The engineer works not only with a successful result, but also with a discrepancy between the forecast and measurement.

## Documents and change management

The design should be described so that it can be reproduced, checked and maintained. Drawings, specifications, calculations and test reports link the design solution to a specific aircraft configuration. A small change in detail can affect nearby systems, mass, or manufacturing technology.

Certification requires confirmation of applicable requirements. The engineer is involved in this process within his role, but not every employee independently approves the entire design. The ability to trace the basis of the decision and agree on a change helps the project go from an idea to an operational aircraft.

## Training and career start

Training usually includes mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials, and calculation tools. Useful projects in which the student can go from setting a task to manufacturing or testing a solution. Programming helps to process data and automate calculations, but does not replace the understanding of physical causes.

The first specialization can be chosen through practice in a design, manufacturing or testing organization. For a beginner, a mentor and the ability to see how his work is used by colleagues are especially important. Piloting can expand the concept of operation, but the diploma of the engineer and the documents of the pilot give different professional opportunities.

## Questions about this career

<details>

<summary>Should an engineer be able to fly?

</summary>

For many engineering positions, pilot’s documents are not required. It is useful to understand operation, but engineering qualifications and flight training solve different problems.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What is the most promising specialization?

</summary>

The choice depends on the interest in the calculation, electronics, design, production or testing. It is more useful to compare available practice and real projects than promises of a universally better profession.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Will the simulation replace the test?

</summary>

The model helps to investigate the solution, but its applicability must be justified. Experiments and tests provide data with which to compare the calculation.
