# Civil aviation pilotCivil aviation pilot

Controls the aircraft together with the crew, prepares the flight and makes decisions within the established procedures.

## Work and training

Work begins before takeoff: the crew studies the route, weather, fuel supply and condition of the aircraft. In flight, pilots distribute tasks, monitor systems, and interact with controllers. Autopilot helps to perform the flight, but the responsibility and control remain with the crew.

The path depends on the country, the curriculum and the future type of work. The training includes theory, simulators and practice, then relevant documents and tolerances are required. Before the choice of training, the program, medical requirements and what qualifications the graduation leads to are specified.

## What does the pilot do before departure?

Pre-flight preparation combines several documents: a flight assignment, meteorological information, information about airfields and the condition of the aircraft. The crew assesses not only the destination airport, but also spare options. The decision is influenced by the weather, mass, available length of the strip, equipment limitations and the ability to get service after landing.

The passenger sees the moment of starting the engines, but a significant part of the work has already been done. The pilots agreed on the distribution of tasks, discussed the route and possible changes. In business aviation, a variable schedule is added to this: today's flight may differ from yesterday's airport, the composition of passengers and the amount of luggage.

## Commander, co-pilot and crew

The commander directs the crew and makes final decisions within the limits of his authority. The second pilot is involved in management, planning and control. Job titles do not mean that one person is constantly piloting, and the other only observes: the tasks of the pilot and supervising pilot are distributed according to the established procedures.

Good work in the cabin is built on mutual verification. If one pilot enters data or performs an action, the other controls the result where it is provided. The ability to calmly report doubt, listen to a colleague and correct a mistake is as important as accurate control of the aircraft.

## What does training consist of

The theory covers aerodynamics, navigation, meteorology, aircraft design, communications, and the human factor. Practice gradually connects this knowledge with real solutions. The simulator allows you to work out a failure or a complex combination of conditions in a controlled environment; it is not just a computer game with a dashboard.

The pilot's document and access to a specific type of aircraft solve different problems. In addition to initial training, a professional career involves periodic checks and maintaining qualifications. Requirements for flight, medical report and exams are determined by the aviation system of the country in which the documents are drawn up and the work is performed.

## Regular flights and business aviation

In the airline, the pilot often works with a repetitive network of routes and a large ground service. The corporate crew can fly on the same aircraft, but visit many unfamiliar airfields. The small operator has a particularly noticeable connection between pilots, dispatch service, engineers and passenger service.

The size of the aircraft does not determine the complexity of the profession by itself. Short strip, mountain relief, international permits or non-standard schedule create separate tasks. Therefore, it is useful to choose a career direction by the nature of the work, and not only by the appearance of the cabin or the prestige of the model.

## What to assess before choosing training

First, it is necessary to understand what qualifications the program gives and whether it is recognized where you plan to work. Then compare the composition of the practice, the availability of training aircraft and simulators, the order of the exams and the full cost. Medical requirements are better understood before large tuition costs.

Talking with graduates helps to check the promises of the school: how long the training actually takes, how organized flights are in bad weather and what support beginners receive. A diploma by itself does not guarantee employment. The employer evaluates documents, experience, language, interaction in the crew and compliance with its training program.

## Questions about this career

<details>

<summary>Can you become a leader immediately?

</summary>

The command position involves relevant experience, qualifications and training under the employer’s program. The completion of the initial training does not give this status in itself.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Autopilot replaces pilots?

</summary>

It performs certain control functions, but the crew sets the working conditions, controls the systems and makes decisions. The responsibility for the flight does not pass to automation.

<details>

<summary>Which school is suitable for business aviation?

</summary>

Compare exit qualifications, recognition of documents, practical training and the following admission stages. The brand of the training aircraft is less important than the suitability of the entire program for your purpose.
