How the aircraft came about

History SJ-100

An experimental import-substituted aircraft made its first flight in 2023 with SaM146 engines; a separate test program is underway for the Russian PD-8 engine.

The SJ-100 grew out of the Superjet 100 program as a version with an expanded share of Russian components. The first prototype of the updated aircraft took off in 2023. For testing, cars with the same engines were also used, while a new PD-8 powerplant was tested. Therefore, the date of the first flight of the base Superjet and the date of flight of the SJ-100 denote different stages.

Milestones and decisions

Programme development

The updated SJ-100 retained the overall size and purpose of the Superjet, but requires testing a new set of Russian systems. The first aircraft with replaced equipment flew in 2023 with SaM146 engines. In 2025, the flight of samples with PD-8 began. These steps allow the glider, equipment and engine to be tested sequentially; the results of the early samples cannot be automatically transferred to the final serial configuration.

Model features

Design and variants

The general scheme of the regional liner is preserved: two engines under the wing, one pass, five seats in a row. The main changes are related to on-board systems, equipment and engine. When replacing units, it is necessary to re-check their joint work, flight characteristics and compliance with certification requirements.

The name SJ-100 is applied to the updated program, and the original SSJ100 was operated with SaM146. Test aircraft with different sets of components do not give one universal table of characteristics. For range and capacity, a specific option is indicated on the page; the timing of serial deliveries depends on the completion of tests.

Powerplant

Engines

Two Russian PD-8 turbofan engines.

The engine variant fitted to an individual aircraft is recorded in its documentation. The powerplant affects thrust, fuel consumption, noise and maintenance requirements.

On board

Cabin and passenger capacity

One pass, 2+3 layout and about one hundred seats. The specific interior depends on the requirements of the customer.

Passenger capacity is up to 103 passengers. The exact number of seats is determined by the operator: business class, kitchens, toilets and recreation areas of the crew take place. Therefore, the layout of the cabin differs even with the same models.

In practice

Operations and uses

SJ-100 is designed for the same regional tasks as the original Superjet, but until the certification of the updated version is completed, it is impossible to describe its park as already established. Possible passenger flights will depend on the supply of engines, maintenance and admission of a specific configuration. The table above shows the version of the catalog; the actual equipment of the supplied aircraft should be checked separately.

Technical analysis

How it works SJ-100

The SJ-100 continues the Superjet program, but its task is broader than a simple name change. The manufacturer replaces much of the equipment previously supplied from abroad and introduces the PD-8 engine. Individual test vehicles retained the SaM146 to test the new airframe systems until the new engine was completed. Therefore, reports about the first flight in 2023 and about flights with PD-8 in 2025 belong to different technical configurations.

When replacing units, it is not enough to confirm that each component works separately. It is required to check the interaction of avionics, power supply, engine, fire and control systems on the ground and in the air. Even with the familiar size of the fuselage, the updated aircraft undergoes a large amount of testing. The range and flow calculation should relate to the final production version, not to the sample, where some of the elements temporarily remained from the original Superjet.

The general scheme of the regional twin-engine aircraft is preserved: one pass, five seats in a row and engines under the wing. This helps to use the accumulated experience with the layout of the cabin, but does not cancel the checks of the changed systems. Separation of the original SSJ100 and SJ-100 in the catalog allows you to honestly specify different engines, test dates and operating status, without combining them into one conditional table.

History and operations

Role SJ-100 in airline service

The regional route requires frequent departures and a short turnaround time at the airport. For the SJ-100, the future practical value depends not only on the design range, but also on the stock of engines, the operation of service centers and the availability of replaced components. Until the advent of a sustainable regular park, this remains a program objective rather than a measured performance result.

The airline will be able to choose the number of seats and interior design for its lines, as well as the original Superjet. On a short flight, the passenger assesses the landing, the place for hand luggage and the observance of the schedule; differences in the power plant are more often manifested for the carrier through service and consumption. The maximum published range does not mean the ability to perform any flight with full load and the necessary fuel reserve.

When comparing the SJ-100 to the original SSJ100, it is important to specify the source date and configuration. Experience with SaM146 confirms the properties of the old version, but does not replace PD-8 data. Similarly, the successful flight of one pilot does not complete the certification of the entire series. Such refinements allow us to assess the progress of the program by actual stages, without mixing project expectations with proven characteristics.

For comparison

Location SJ-100 among other aircraft

Russian models in the catalog belong to several independent tasks and generations. Tu-204, Tu-214 and Il-96 were created at the end of the Soviet period and later used in passenger and special aviation. Regional Il-114 chose a turboprop scheme. The Superjet 100 became a later jet program for relatively short routes, and the SJ-100 continues it with a changed system composition and engine. MC-21 belongs to the class of new medium-haul airliners. These programs can not be combined into one line of characteristics: they differ in the size of the cabin, role, engines and degree of readiness. Yak-130 generally refers to the military training of pilots and requires a separate approach to comparison.

In the history of each program, you need to distinguish between the first flight, certificate, the beginning of serial production and a real passenger flight. These events can be separated by years. For the updated version of the test of the original aircraft does not automatically prove the readiness of new engines and systems. This approach is especially important when reading information about the MC-21, SJ-100 and Il-114-300: the timing of deliveries was repeatedly announced in advance, and the technical stages must be evaluated according to the inspections actually performed. For older types, the exact modification and purpose of the board is more important - the passenger Tu-214 or Il-96 differs from a special aircraft on a close platform. Even when size fits the route, an airline needs sustainable service and spare parts availability.

The SJ-100 develops the Superjet 100 platform, but its task includes replacing a number of systems and switching to the PD-8 engine. This requires a separate check of the operation of the power plant, avionics and system interaction, even if the basic dimensions of the aircraft are familiar from the serial SSJ100. On the project page, it is useful to distinguish between the test board, the approved design and the aircraft delivered to the airline. The stated delivery time or the planned range does not by itself confirm the performance of regular flights with a new modification.

Updating import-substituted systems changes the supply chain and service requirements. The carrier is important not only the date of receipt of the first aircraft, but also the availability of spare parts, simulators and engineering documentation for the sustainable operation of the entire fleet.
