Ballooning uses atmospheric buoyancy: an envelope containing lighter material displaces surrounding air. This differs from an aeroplane, whose wing generates lift through airflow. Balloon history is therefore a distinct branch of flight development.

The public demonstration preceded other experiments that year, including an animal flight and the first free human flight. These stages should not be combined into one date. June’s event demonstrated the principle at large scale and prepared the way for passenger trials.

Free flight before the aeroplane era

The Montgolfier brothers’ human balloon flight belongs to lighter-than-air flight. Heated air inside the envelope produces lift rather than airflow over a wing. This important ballooning milestone is distinct from the arrival of the controllable powered aeroplane.

Free flight means the absence of a restraining tether. It does not mean pilots could choose direction like an aeroplane crew: a balloon’s movement follows the wind. This distinction clarifies the sequence of flight development without confusing physical principles.

Ballooning and aviation developed using different sources of lift. A balloon’s envelope and air temperature solve a different problem from an aircraft wing. Comparing the principles places early achievements in a coherent history of flight.

The brief flight began rather than completed the development of practical aviation. The Wrights continued testing and improving their aircraft. Connect the anniversary with earlier gliders, control research and subsequent repeatable, longer flights.
