Connecting between low-cost flights: where the risks lie

An airport with many low-cost services does not necessarily offer passengers a seamless connection between them.

Connecting between low-cost flights: where the risks lie

Context

Separate tickets

If you book two flights separately, the airlines may not be responsible for a missed connection. You may have to collect your baggage, leave the transit area and check in again. Allow extra time if you also need to change terminals.

In practice

Work out the full cost

Compare the total cost, including baggage and any overnight stay, rather than just the two fares. Check baggage-drop deadlines and the entry requirements for the country where you are connecting. With a short connection, a more expensive through-ticket can sometimes be both more reliable and better value.

Summary

The takeaway

A large number of low-cost airlines at an airport does not guarantee a protected connection.
