An approach follows a published instrument procedure or a visual pattern. The crew monitors direction, descent profile, speed and configuration.
The approach ends in landing or a go-around. An approach clearance does not guarantee touchdown: unsuitable conditions, an unstable approach or a runway obstruction can require discontinuing the landing.
