A situation requiring immediate action to protect people and the aircraft.

An in-flight emergency can involve fire, a serious system failure, critically low fuel or another immediate threat. Pilots follow the procedures for their aircraft and tell air traffic control what assistance they need.
MAYDAY indicates grave and imminent danger. PAN PAN is used for urgency without that same degree of danger.
