The formation of ice on aircraft surfaces in suitable airborne or ground conditions.

Ice can change an aerofoil's shape, increase drag and affect lift. It may also affect sensors, intakes and other equipment.
Ice-protection capabilities and limits depend on aircraft design. Ground contamination and in-flight icing require the procedures appropriate to each situation; they are not the same operational problem.
