History

The AS532 Cougar is a military transport helicopter within the developed Super Puma family. Unlike a light reconnaissance aircraft, its main value lies in moving personnel, equipment, and cargo. Cougar covers several versions, so specifications for an individual helicopter should be tied to its variant and operator. The Dutch AS532U2, for example, is not a universal template for every aircraft in the family.

A medium transport helicopter is useful when a group of people or a load must reach a place without a prepared runway. Cougar can operate from temporary sites and support missions on land. Carrying a load beneath the fuselage makes it possible to move objects that are difficult to fit inside, but changes aerodynamics and flight-planning requirements. Whether an external load is suitable depends on its weight, shape, and attachment method.

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence uses the AS532U2 Cougar to transport personnel and supplies. Its list of duties also includes medical evacuation, humanitarian support, and maritime work. Some Dutch Cougars can operate from ships. Shipboard flying requires appropriate equipment and crew preparation; not every helicopter in the fleet should be assumed to be ready to land on every vessel at all times.

Firefighting provides another example of multirole use. A Cougar can carry a flexible water bucket on its external hook. This shows how a military aircraft can assist civilian emergency services. Such missions nevertheless need dedicated equipment and coordination with ground teams. They do not define the helicopter as a firefighting design or change its origin as a transport platform.

Long service makes avionics upgrades important. In 2026, the Dutch defence ministry reported a program to renew its Cougars with a new cockpit and updated communications and navigation equipment. The aim is to keep the existing fleet effective until a successor arrives. These improvements belong to the particular AS532U2 program and cannot be assigned retrospectively to early Cougars operated elsewhere.

The AS532 sits between the original Puma and later military Super Puma variants. Its history shows how a transport platform can remain useful through varied tasks and equipment updates. A precise profile names the modification, country of service, and actual configuration. Only then can figures for capacity, range, or available missions be discussed meaningfully. General family figures can help orientation, but they should not replace information about the aircraft a reader is actually viewing.
