History

The Embraer C-390 Millennium is a Brazilian twin-engine jet transport in the medium-payload class. Embraer developed it as a modern tactical airlift platform for missions long performed by turboprop transports. The programme drew on the company's experience with jet airliners, but the cargo fuselage and military equipment followed separate operational requirements. The prototype first flew on 3 February 2015, and the first production aircraft was delivered to the Brazilian Air Force in 2019.

The C-390 has a high wing, two jet engines and a rear ramp. Pallets, vehicles and other equipment can enter through that opening. The ramp also supports airborne delivery of personnel and supplies. The cabin can be arranged for medical evacuation. A KC-390 configuration adds the equipment needed to refuel other aircraft in flight. These labels reflect equipment and role; every transport flight is not also a tanker mission. Comparisons with other aircraft need to identify the particular configuration.

Jet propulsion gives the aircraft relatively high route speed, which can matter during urgent delivery. An airlift mission still depends on more than speed. Freight must be gathered, positioned within balance limits, restrained, unloaded and handed to ground teams. At a destination with limited infrastructure, runway length and condition, fuel availability and maintenance support become important. Maximum payload and the range of a particular flight are linked, so one figure cannot describe all of the C-390's usefulness.

The Brazilian Air Force became the first operator and used the aircraft for transport and other tasks. The programme later secured customers overseas. Nations replacing older fleets may value the ability to perform several missions with a common platform. Adopting a new type nevertheless requires aircrew training, trained technicians and a spare-parts system. Unless the aircraft is integrated into existing logistics, its technical capabilities cannot deliver their full benefit.

The C-390 holds a notable place in Brazilian aerospace history as a large domestically developed jet aimed at an international market. It should not be described simply as a jet-powered copy of the C-130. Its structure, engines and development programme differ. The practical idea behind the Millennium is to move substantial loads and people quickly, while adding other missions when equipped for them, without needing a giant strategic transport for every sortie.
