Life and work in aviation

Dick Rutan (1938–2024) was an American military and test pilot who flew Voyager around the world in 1986. With Jeana Yeager, he circumnavigated without landing or refuelling. His brother Burt designed the aircraft. Engineering, test preparation and crew work were distinct parts of the shared project.

Flight experience

Prior to the record-breaking project, Dick Rutan gained extensive experience in military and test aviation. Working with different tasks helped to assess the behavior of the aircraft and perform the established program. Voyager needed to adapt to a completely different car. It was designed for economical long-term flight, and not for the usual capabilities of a high-speed military aircraft.

Voyager Tests

Voyager was designed for maximum route duration with limited fuel supply. Tests allowed to assess the stability, operation of the engines and design capabilities. Rutan participated in the flight preparation of the project. Verification of the car was necessary before the round-the-world flight, since the design range could not be considered confirmed only by calculations and the unusual appearance of the aircraft.

Nine Days on Earth

In December 1986, Rutan and Gina Yeager started from Edwards Base and returned there after a round-the-world route. The flight went without landing or refueling. The crew worked in a cramped cabin for about nine days. Management, systems monitoring and rest were required to be distributed so that people remained functional throughout the task.

Pilot and constructor

Dick Rutan is not a Voyager constructor instead of Bert Rutan. His contribution is related to testing and piloting with Yeager. Saved aircraft allows you to study the project as a common result: calculations, manufacture, training and crew work complemented each other. The biography of the tester shows how the technical possibility turns into a really long flight.

How to understand the aviation record

Aviation achievements are recorded on a specific task and category. Speed on a short section, speed on a closed route and range require different conditions. The result with a useful load is not equal to the indicator of an empty machine. Therefore, the comparison begins with a description of the task, the type of device and the registration rules. A simple number without this context can create a false impression, even if the date and surname of the pilot are correct.

For a long-distance route, fuel, mass, and equipment must correspond to the intended stages. Additional tanks can increase the stock, but change the load and interior space. Wind affects the speed relative to the ground and the time of passage of the site. The ocean route also limits the choice of landing sites. Training includes ground stations and communications, so a successful flight is the result of the work not only of the person behind the controls, but also of the organization’s team.

Single flight means one pilot in a flight crew, not lack of assistance on the ground. The non-stop route excludes intermediate landings, but the possibility of refueling in the air requires a separate clarification. The round-the-world journey with stops refers to a different type of achievement than continuous flight. Keeping these differences allows you to honestly describe records of different eras and not attribute to one crew what the other performed under different conditions.

Long-term work affects a person: attention and the ability to make decisions must be maintained throughout the program. In a multi-seat aircraft, duties are shared among participants, and in a single route, training provides affordable ways to reduce the load. The historical record shows the possibilities of a particular project. It does not become a ready-made instruction for modern flight and does not cancel the requirements for equipment, qualifications and planning of normal operation.
