Avionics specialist

Works with electronic aircraft systems: communication, navigation, devices and related equipment.

Work and training

The avionics specialist checks electronic systems, analyzes faults and performs work on technical documentation. Devices and software must interact correctly with other aircraft systems. After the intervention, the necessary checks and records are required.

Knowledge of electrical engineering, electronics and measurement methods is useful. The scope of permitted work depends on the qualification and admission of the organization. When choosing training, it is important to clarify the practical base and types of equipment. Installing an update on an aircraft requires procedures and documentation; home electronics setup experience does not replace professional training.

What about avionics

Avionics combines electronic equipment of the aircraft: communication, navigation, indication, management and data processing. The specific composition depends on the type and modification of the aircraft. The specialist needs to understand how individual blocks interact, what data is transmitted and what signs help to localize the malfunction.

A modern screen can display information from several systems. An error on the indicator does not always mean a malfunction of the screen itself: the reason can be in the sensor, wiring, power supply or data exchange. Therefore, diagnostics requires knowledge of architecture, and not only the ability to replace the electronic unit.

How is the diagnosis

The first stage is to compare the crew's comment with the aircraft configuration and available diagnostic information. Then the specialist checks the systems in the prescribed sequence. The same symptom in different modifications can have different causes, so the applicability of the technical instruction is of practical importance.

After work, confirm the serviceability within the required check and draw up the result. When transmitting a shift, it is useful to accurately separate the observation, the action performed, and the remaining question. The phrase "everything is checked" is less useful than a specific record of the operations performed and the result obtained.

Electronics, software and configuration

Working with avionics involves understanding electrical circuits, digital interfaces, and equipment interconnections. Sometimes the service affects the loading of data or software, but such operations are performed according to approved procedures. The domestic approach of “installing the latest version” for the aviation system is not suitable.

Changing one component may require checking compatibility with the rest of the equipment. Therefore, version and configuration identification is important along with the part number. The difference between diagnostics, operational update and design change helps not to go beyond the allowed work.

The path into the profession

The basis is electrical engineering, electronics, measurements and reading technical documentation. Practice introduces aviation wiring, connectors, tools and rules for handling components. A good program combines laboratory training with an understanding of the real aircraft and its maintenance system.

Different countries have their own rules for confirming qualifications and admissions. In the European system, the category B2 is associated with avionics, but the category name does not replace the verification of specific credentials of a specialist and an organization. Before training, it is useful to find out where the practice takes place and what the next step is needed after graduation.

Skills and career directions

A strong specialist carefully works with data and knows how to explain the technical result to colleagues. English is often needed for documentation and equipment designations. Discipline in measurements, attention to detail and the ability not to draw conclusions on one basis are important.

Development is possible in the diagnosis of a certain family of aircraft, modernization of equipment, technical support and training. A maintenance avionics specialist and an engineer designing a new electronic system perform different roles. This choice affects the necessary preparation and nature of daily work.

Questions about this career

Is it possible to switch from consumer electronics?

Knowledge of electronics is useful, but aviation training, practice and the necessary tolerances will be required. The aircraft is maintained according to its documentation and control system.

Do you need a specialist to write programs?

It depends on the workplace. Diagnostics and maintenance of avionics are not equal to software development, although understanding digital systems is useful.

How is avionics different from mechanical maintenance?

The main subject of work is electronic systems and their interaction. The limits of authority are determined by the qualifications, documentation and service organization.
